On the way home, everyone enjoyed social time and refreshments at Tim Hortons in Lucan. The group met at Upstairs, Hansen's on Nov. 11, with each per- son bringing a non-per- ishable food item for the Christmas Bureau. President Bev Delbridge called the meeting to order. It was announced that the Christmas party will be held with sister chap- ters Dec. 7 at the Masonic Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. Plans were made to purchase tickets for the musical Hello Dolly at Stratford in the spring. A donation was made to the Christmas Bureau and to the Goderich Alexandra Marine Hospital towards the purchase of a $40,000 Fibro-opti Scope for colonoscopies. A thank you note was received from Families for Children for continuing support for a child in India. Faye Van Oss from Unique Baskets was introduced. She dis- played a variety of Christmas items for sale, including musical Santas, stocking starers, ornaments, snowmen and Christmas gift bas- kets. She announced that she was holding an open house at 99 Victoria St., RR 1 Centralia, Sat., Nov. 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments were served by Mary Burton and June Essery. Christmas concert planned in Varna By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA — Deb Rathwell welcomed approximately 48 women to the UCW potluck din- ner and program last Thursday evening. Merry Christmas was said to all members, former mem- bers, neighbours and friends. Rathwell thanked the committee of Margaret Hayter, Carol Simons, Sjoujke Steenbeek and Bernice Reid. Thanks also to Rathwell for all the time she puts forth for the UCW. Pastor Elly Van Bergen then said the blessing and another delicious dinner was enjoyed with good fellowship. Eight takeouts were also deliv- ered. Following the din- ner everyone enjoyed the program. Rathwell gave a run- down of a busy 2004 and what to expect in 2005. Thank-yous were read from Joan McAsh, Scott,Kelli and Anna Rathwell, and also from Doris Wilson and family. Pastor Van Bergen and organist Shirley Hill were presented with Christmas gifts. `Santa's Prayer On Christmas Eve' was read. Miranda Postill (daugh- ter of Tammy and Daryl) then favoured everyone with her gift of music and sang Dancing Bears and Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. Carol Simons thanked her. Scripture readings were given, carols sung inter- mittently by the commit- tee and Advent candles lit. Simons ended with 'Her Wish For Us As We Go'. It was a wonderful evening. Sunday church service was held in Goshen with the celebra- tion of Advent. Leanne, Mike and Morgan Colclough lit the first candle. Sun., Dec. 5 is White Gift Sunday in Varna. Please bring unwrapped donations for the Huron County Christmas Bureau. The Brucefield Congregational Christmas concert will be presented Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. Approximately 100 people viewed the won- derful display of 45 nativity scenes at the Varna Church on Sunday. Pastor Elly Van Bergen and helpers did a fabulous job displaying different nativity scenes several congregational members as well as oth- ers offered for viewing. Good fun and fellowship was also enjoyed. Thanks to Pastor Van Bergen and her helpers and all who loaned nativ- ity scenes. Nov. 23 the Crokinole Club met with doubles play. Members were paired up by picking cards. Joe Fulop and Jim Kirton were first with 39 points, Gerald Dearing and Abe Leitch 35, Murray Purdue and Bob Russell 31 and Charles Reid and Joan Beierling with 29. The club will meet on Tues., Dec. 7 for singles play and it will be the last night for the year. Happy 50th birthday to Blaine Stephenson. VARNA NEWS Join St. Patrick's for evening prayer service By Hazel Davis SAINTSBURY CORRESPONDENT SAINTSBURY — Ralph, Joyce and Darren Simpson visited on Tuesday evening with Hazel Davis and Hugh was din- ner guest with Suzanne and family. Ron and Margaret Carroll enjoyed their family visiting this week. On Saturday evening St. Patrick's held evening prayer service Advent 1 at 6:30 p.m., with Bob MacGillivray leading, assisted by Courtney, Katie - Scarlett and Corbin reading the Scripture lessons and Starr Davis presenting the offering. The first candle in the Advent wreath was lit for peace. Focus and message: Consider ways in which we might walk in the divine light God gives. Service closed with Advent prayer and hymn. The next evening prayer ser- vice will be held Advent 2, Sat., Dec. 4. SAINTSBURY NEWS Hazel Davis attended St. Paul's Anglican Church, Kirkton at 9:15 a.m., Nov. 28. Melba Maillet of Goderich was guest for lunch with Hugh and Hazel on Sunday. Get well wishes go out to Cheryl Carroll from all her friends and relatives in the area as she recovers from surgery.
