Wind energy comes to new Exeter home
Homeowner Evert Schaap, left, and Len Lansink of
Strat-Con Construction make sure the 80 -foot tall
windmill is ready for installation. At right: Schaap
ensures everything is in good working order before a
100 -foot crane lifted the windmill into position. (pho-

Above, a new windmill is installed beside Evert
Schaap's home and business on Highway 83 just west
of Exeter. Schaap's new home relies completely on
wind and solar energy for power. The 80 -foot wind-
mill, which features blades 2.5 metres long, will come
down every year or so for maintenance.

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Drivers com-
ing in and out of Exeter's
west end on Highway 83
have a new landmark to
see — an 80 -foot windmill.
The windmill is part of
Evert Schaap's new home
and business, called e -vert
energy, that relies com-
pletely on wind and solar
energy for power. No
hydro or gas hook-up's
are required and Schaap's
energy-efficient home is
one of only a handful in
North America.
The new windmill was
erected last Friday morn-
ing and Schaap expected it
to be generating electricity
by the end of the day.
Schaap, his wife and
their two children moved
to Exeter from Jerseyville
(east of Brantford) about a
month ago and have been
relying on solar energy
until the windmill was put
up last week. They also
had a generator as a back
up.
As previously reported in
the Times -Advocate,
Schaap's home will pro-
duce almost 110 carbon
dioxide — in fact, the only
time carbon dioxide will
be released from the home
is on rare occasions when
he has to use his wood
stove for heat. Drinking
water for the home comes
from a well and is treated
and heated on site. There
is also a greywater tank to
collect water from the roof
that will be used for things
like the toilet, watering the
lawn and washing cars. A
filter will treat water after
it leaves the septic tank so
it can be used for agricul-
tural purposes.
Schaap, who designed
the pole for the windmill
himself, admitted he was a
bit nervous before the
windmill went up, and
added it will have to come
down every year or so for
maintenance.
"It will be a nice land-
mark as you drive into
Exeter," he said, adding
he chose to move to
Exeter because of the
winds coming from Lake
Huron.
One concern with high
windmills is that they will
get hit by lightning —
Schaap says there's little
he can do about that,
except ground the guide
wires as well as possible.
Also, there's a much taller
transmitter across the
highway, so Schaap is
hoping his 80 -foot tower is
spared most of the light-
ning strikes, which can

Nigerian scam reported
by Municipality of
South Huron
SOUTH HURON — A representative of the Municipality
of South Huron contacted Huron OPP Nov. 8 to
report a suspicious e-mail.
Police say an e-mail claiming a Canadian living
in Nigeria had died in an automobile crash was
sent to someone in the area. The person was ask-
ing for assistance in obtaining the man's money,
which was in the amount of $25.5 million dollars.
This person was to supply the name of the next of
kin within 60 days. In exchange for 20 per cent of
the money, the recipient was asked to step in as
next of kin and provide their full name, address,
telephone number and fax number so they can be
contacted and notified of the next steps for the
transaction to be completed.
The OPP wants to warn people not to be fooled
by these types of e-mails, which are a form of the
Nigerian scam.
damage the generator's
magnets.
Schaap moved to
Canada from Holland
three years ago and has
been interested in energy
efficiency for 25 years.
Projects like his are much
more common in Europe,
which has been dealing
with energy issues longer
than North America has.
Schaap's business will
sell energy-efficient prod-
ucts such as small wind-
mills, emergency lights
and flashlights that don't
use batteries.
