Remembrance is theme of meeting

ELIMVILLE —
Remembrance was the
theme for the November
meeting of the Elimville
Women's Institute held at
Grace Pym's home.
President Shirley Cooper
opened the meeting with a
poem, Remember Us fol-
lowed by the Institute Ode
and Mary Stewart Collect.
Seven members respond-
ed to the roll call by nam-
ing a family member or
friend who served in the
first and second world
wars.
Muriel Parsons reported
on the recent Huron South
District board meeting.
The names of the newly
elected officers were read.
Marilyn Pym of the
Hurondale WI will provide
patterns for anyone wish-
ing to knit articles to dress
the medical dolls for the
Children's Hospital of
Western Ontario.
Program convener
Grace Pym complimented
several local newspapers
for the excellent coverage
of Remembrance Day ser-
vices and related events
this year. A video 'Why
Should We Remember' on
loan from the Exeter
Legion was viewed.
Members recited in uni-
son the well-known poem,
In Flanders Fields.
Numerous facts about
the history of the poppy
were read. In 1921 the
Great War Veterans
Association (which
became the Royal
Canadian Legion) adopted
the poppy as a symbol of
remembrance in aid of
Coming events...
fund raising. Today the
Poppy Campaign is one of
the Legion's most impor-
tant programs.
The War Amps, well
known for its lost key
return service, is another
organization worthy of
attention. Teaching
younger generations
about the true horrors of
war is part of their legacy.
Through Operation
Legacy older members of
CHAMP (child amputees
program) will continue
the tradition of `amputees
helping amputees' and
will pass the Never Again
message to future genera-
tions long after no war
veterans remain.
A video from the Never
Again series was shown
and the theme song
played. Numerous videos
are available and may be
ordered by visiting the
War Amps website at
www.waramps.ca
Programs developed
through War Amps
include CHAMPS,
Matching Mothers, Jump
Start, Play Safe, and Drive
Safe as well as providing
information on the latest
developments in artifical
limbs and devices for
amputees.
Two readings `I Wish
You Enough' and `Stupid
Accident Excuses' were
given by Parsons. All
members shared interest-
ing trivia and social time
followed.
The next meeting to be
held Dec. 8 at Shirley
Cooper's home.
