Crediton UC Sunday School chili luncheon set for Nov 28
CREDITON — The latest
meeting of the Crediton
Women's Institute was
held Nov. 17 at the home
of Lois Brownlee.
President Anne Cottel
opened the meeting with
the Ode and Collect and
read, 'The Gift of
Friendship'. Roll call—an
activity that would have
taken place about now in
the homes of pioneers—
was answered by 12
members and two guests.
Minutes were approved
and business conducted.
Reports were typed out for
members to read.
Crediton WI members are
catering the Crediton
UCW luncheon on Dec. 2.
The next regular meet-
ing will be Dec. 9 with
members, their families
and friends invited. Roll
call will be 'What I am
doing for Christmas' and
each member is to bring a
half dozen cookies or
squares for lunch.
Local history
Guest speaker for the
evening was Eric
Heywood of Exeter who
spoke on genealogy.
Heywood possesses great
knowledge of the history
of the area, and of many
of the WI members'
ancestors who settled the
area. He told of many
funny incidents that the
families endured with
runaway horses and how
farmers used oxen in the
fields as they were more
dependable. Brownlee
thanked Heywood and
presented him with a gift
of appreciation.
The meeting closed with
Brownlee and Mary
Kenney serving a delicious
lunch.
Church news
At the Sunday morning
Help families by donating
to the Christmas Bureau
EXETER — This
Christmas you can do the
right thing by helping
those who need it most.
A donation to the
Christmas Bureau helps
ensure there is food in
every household and gifts
for every child in Huron
County.
As readers will notice,
the Huron County
Christmas bag is included
in this week's paper.
Printed on the bag are
details of where each of
the county bureaus are
and the times gifts and
food can be dropped off.
Locally, the Exeter
Christmas Bureau is at
Precious Blood Roman
Catholic Church at 200
Sanders St. W.
The church will be open
to receive gifts the week of
Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m.
Since 1967, churches
and the Children's Aid
Society have worked
together to make sure
every family has food and
gifts. The churches in the
county manage the five
1
Christmas Bureaus and
distribute donations to
families in the area.
To receive assistance,
families do not need a
connection with the
Children's Aid Society.
Families must live in
Huron County and the
person registering the
children must be the cus-
todial parent. For many
families, the Huron County
Christmas Bureau is their
only contact with the
Children's Aid Society.
Appointments made by
families needing assis-
tance are confidential.
Money donated to the
bureau is used to buy food
certificates and clothing.
All items are bought from
local businesses.
Some ideas of gifts you
can donate include: non-
perishable food, new
underwear, socks, pyja-
mas, sweatshirts and
pants (sizes 10-14), blue
jeans and toys.
