HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2004-11-24, Page 88 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, November 24, 2004 Students in the Grade 9 and I OVisual Arts Program at South Huron District High School competed in two poster/poetry contests for Remembrance Day. one sponsored by the Legion and one sponsored by the high school.The poems and posters commemorated sacrifices made by Canadians around the world. Receiving awards and prizes in the SHDHS contest, which was judged by staff and students, were: Grade 9 first -Lisa Horn, second -Michelle Boere, third -Megan Hodgson (tie) -Mandy Mathonia, honourable mention -Jen Nesbit -Kay Weber. (photo/PatBolen) White Gift Sunday at Varna UC By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA — The top four shufflers for last week were Elmer Hayter 255, Charles Reid 228, Norene Hayter 225 and Ruth Johnston 215. Church was in Goshen on Sunday with Pastor Elly Van Bergen. Varna United Church Women meet Thurs., Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. for a potluck supper. This includes all members,, for- mer members and community women. Come on out and enjoy good fun and fel- lowship! Sun., Nov. 28 will be the 1st Sunday of Advent with Church in Goshen. Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Varna Church come and enjoy 'No Room At the Inn Advent Tea'. Come out and see the collection of nativity scenes and sets and enjoy tea and goodies with friends and neighbours. A free will offering only for the Missions and Service Fund. Anyone that has a nativity set or scene that they would like to share for the day they could call Pastor Van Bergen at 233-3110. Mon., Nov. 29 the official board meet in Goshen. Dec. 2, 3, and 4 the Clinton Community Players present Sorry Wrong Chimney with Cameron Laurie in the cast. Dec. 4 there will be a bake sale for Camp Menesetung from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Suncoast Mall in Goderich. Sun., Dec. 5 Church will be in Varna celebrating White Gift. Please bring unwrapped donations for the Huron County Christmas Bureau. I wish to thank Pastor Van Bergen for writing the Varna News for the two weeks while I was away being a Grandma. Christmas dinner planned for WI GRAND BEND — At the November Grand Bend Women's Institute meeting the members were informed that the quilt, Meadow Lily, they had made for the Breast Cancer Quilt Show in Stratford had sold for $1,075. The women have completed another quilt to be sold next September in Toronto. President Cass Lovie thanked the women for entertaining at the Blue Water Nursing Home November birthday party. The fall board district directors report was that the Grand Bend branch will host the district picnic in July and that the Tweedsmuir Workshop will be in Dashwood in August. Several books, Fighting for Home and Country will be ordered. These are the stories of women during the wars. One of these books will be donated to the Grand Bend Library. A Christmas card for friends in Killarney Women's Institute, Manitoba was signed by everyone present. A representative from the Ontario Alzheimer Society was presented with a cheque. This money was raised selling hotdogs at the Farmer's Market in October. Dee Rath was the lucky winner of the door prize. The women then used their creative ideas to make a Christmas felted hanging mitt. These mitts will hang on Christmas trees or door knobs throughout the fes- tive season. The next meeting will be a Christmas dinner at Aunt Gussies on Dec. 16. The 2004/2005 website is now completed. Check it out. A century after its formation the WI continues to encourage responsible citi- zens, promote good family life -skills and revitalize community spirit. WI offers opportunities for friendship, creativity, community involvement and much more. Bob Bell, Pete Swan and Andy Bilcke, along with other volunteers, were out on the streets of Hensall for the past few weeks cleaning up leaves with the rebuilt Hensall leaf blower that was repaired by Bilcke and George Parker after being given back to the village by the Municipality of Bluewater,with funds raised from businesses and resi- dents by the Hensall Community Development Committee.
