(photos/Mary Simmons) CWL members note penny sale success EXETER - The monthly meeting of Precious Blood Catholic Women's League was held Nov.9 in the parish hall following the recitation of the rosary. There were 15 members present. The meeting was opened with the League Prayer. President Joan Agnew gave a read- ing: 'If God hada ...'. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Cecilia Mittelholtz. Pat Hern gave the treasur- er's report and encouraged everyone to contin- ue to save grocery tapes. Wendy Meidinger thanked the women for their °" 0o0 help in making this year's penny sale a great suc- cess. Winners of the draw tickets were first prize, $200 gift certificate from Ellison Travel, Josephine Lang; second prize, $100 cash, Josephine Lang; third prize, $75 gift certificate from Eddington's, Mary Van Rooy. Anna Marie Cook gave a reading entitled, A Veterans' Day Poem. Darlene Geoffrey will convene next year's penny sale. Volunteers signed up to help at the Christmas Bureau; $50 will go for expenses at the Christmas Bureau and $400 will be sent to Calcutta to help the poor. ▪ The next meeting will be Nov. 30, with a +' potluck dinner following the 6 p.m. mass. Mary Koricina's group is in charge of the meeting. The door prize was won by Geoffrey. The meeting closed with prayer. Tinker -Tots presents Christmas home tour By Liz Sangster HENSALL CORRESPONDENT HENSALL - Nov. 7 Hensall Legion held their Remembrance Day service at Hensall United Church. The service was con- ducted by Pastor Fred Darke and Tracy Whitson-Bahro. After the church service, veterans and Legion members paraded to the cenotaph for a short service and laying of wreaths and crosses. Wreaths were laid by Comrade Jean Munn (Government of Canada); Comrade Don Orr (Canadian Armed Forces); Cecil Pepper (Province of Ontario); Comrade Stew Taylor (Royal Canadian Legion Branch 468); Deputy Mayor Paul Klopp and Joyce Dowson (Municipality of Bluewater); Bob Bell (Municipality of Huron East); Wayne Reid (Kinsmen and Kinettes); Charles Dalrymple (General Coach); Comrade John Skea (WG Thompson and Sons); Sue Riley (Hensall Co -Op); Comrade Iva Reid (CE Reid and Sons); Joyce McBeath (JM McBeath Funeral Homes); Bob Bell and Cecil Pepper (Hensall Presbyterian and United Churches); Comrade Doug Wedlake (Queensway Nursing Home); Bill Gibson (William's Hairstyling); Karen Dickens (Bank of Montreal); Comrade Pete Zwaan (Liquor Control Board). There were refreshments after- wards at the branch. On Thursday morning Nov. 11 seven Legion members attended the assembly at Hensall Public School. A very impressive Remembrance Day service was conducted by the students assist- ed by their teachers. Comrade Larry Uyl introduced World War II veteran John Skea who was in the Italian Campaign 60 years ago. Skea spoke briefly on how important it is for children to learn the sacrifices that were made and how everyone is affect- ed by war. On Thursday evening Nov. 11 the branch held their Remembrance Day dinner at the Hensall Community Centre. Guest speaker Robert Essery from Centralia spoke about his uncle, 1st Lt. Donald Newcombe, who was killed in action on July 11, 1944. He showed slides taken in France, the plane his uncle pilot- ed, and his experiences in France viewing the sight where the plane crashed, and also viewing the gravesite at the American Military Cemetery at Omaha Beach. A past -president's medal was awarded to Comrade Stew Taylor and an executive medal to Marg Upshall, and presentations were made by Zone Commander Shirley Chalmers. Hensall Legion voted to donate $150 to the Hensall Development Action Committee towards their HENSALL NEWS expenses at their meeting on Wednesday evening. There is still time to pay Legion dues until Nov. 30 at a cost of $34. After this date dues are $39. On Sat., Nov. 20 there will be a euchre tournament and turkey draw at the Legion, registration at 12:30 p.m, games begin at 1 p.m., non-smoking facilities. At Hensall United Church, Agnes Bray was the organist with Dorothy Corbett greeting the peo- ple. Pastor Darke's message: He has gone to be the guest of the sinner. This was a special service with the baptism of Andrew Richard Taylor, son of Robert and Christine Taylor, and Euan Alexander Wareing, son of Donald and Lynn Wareing. Lucielle Beer and Bill Gibson assisted in the ceremony. The anniversary service will be held Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. At Carmel Presbyterian Church Tracy Whitson-Bahro was the minister with Joyce Pepper play- ing the organ. The offering was received by Harry Smith and Robert Bell. There will be no ser- vice at Carmel Church on Nov. 21. Tinker -Tots home tour The Tinker -Tots Co-operative Nursery School presents `Christmas at our House' home tour 2004. This event will be held Fri., Nov. 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and Sat., Nov. 20 from 12 to 4 p.m. There will be refreshments and free draws at the nursery school. The ticket price is $10. "The Ontario's West Coast Riders annual Kause for Kids campaign received a kick start on Sept. 25. Gar's Bar and Grill hosted a Poker Run for local motorcyclists, with proceeds going to "Kause for Kids."
