In the first game of pool play, they defeated Centennial from Guelph 4-2. Shelby Musser started the scoring at 13 minutes of the first half, blasting the ball past the keeper, after receiving the ball from Leanne Cronyn. Kristen Reschke increased the scoring after 28 minutes, assist- ed by Musser. Just before the half, Centennial got one back. In the second half, Cronyn made it three with a rocket shot. Centennial scored again, but Kelly Cronyn secured the win when she received a behind the back pass from her sister on a Musser penalty cor- ner. In the second game, the team played Crestwood from the Peterborough area and came away with a deserved 1-0 vic- tory. 8 Nov. 2004 Catherine DeCorte Lorraine Alexander Alice Thiel Dave Woodward Helen McKay Marj Reichert Merle McLellan Joe Van Dorren 503 452 450 432 418 369 364 342 Reschke scored at the start of the second half, with Kristin Ferguson and Kelly Cronyn laying the ground work. The game was quite one sided, but scoring was very difficult in the worsening conditions. Friday morning the Panthers just needed a tie to win the pool, but try as they might, they could not find the net. They totally dominated the game, but between not being sharp around the goal in the first half and competing with com- plete mud in the second, they could not score. In the only trip into the Panther zone, Hill Park managed to get a penalty corner and scored to dump South Huron into second position in the pool with a 1-0 victory. In the quarter final, the girls faced Notre Dame from Burlington and had a catastrophic start as they allowed Notre Dame to score with just 30 sec- onds gone on the clock. Kelsey O'Rourke saved a good stroke to keep the score at 1-0 and allow the Panthers to gain some momentum. For a period of time the Panthers kept it even, but sustained injuries to Amber Caldwell, Kelly Cronyn and Reschke and removed them from fur- ther play. Notre Dame added a second to secure the win and eliminate South Huron from further play. Panthers coach Jim Workman said the girls had a tremendous season and are to be congratu- lated. 2 Nov. 2004 3 Wins Ann Lorento Irene Dyck June Moore Isobelle Rescorl John Horn 2 Wins Geraldine Smith Jean Crerar Bill Thomas Jean Cole Lee Thomas Marge McCurdy Mary Horn 3 Nov. 2004 280 217 210 204 156 212 201 195 165 165 129 128 3 Wins Frank Phillips 264 Ann Lorento 247 2 Wins Lorraine Alexander 192 Amanda Hamilton 155 Elwood Truemner 152 Joan Cole 145 Helen Burton 140 John Horn 138 Eleanor Hendrick 125 Shirley Truemner 114 Katie Stewart (24) looks for a play for the Panther senior girls against St. Mikes Nov. 3.The Panthers lost a 45-31 game before winning the consolation champi- onship at a tournament in Parkhill on the weekend. (photolPatBolen) Panthers are consolation champs EXETER — The senior girls basketball team played an undefeated St. Mikes team Nov. 3 at South Huron District High School. After a slow start, great defence by the Panthers held their opponent to only four points in the second quarter to keep the game close. In the second half, a determined Panther team created some great chances but was unable to capitalize on opportunities. The final score was 45-31 for St. Mikes. The game was highlighted by some great ball handling by Katie Stewart, dominant rebounding by Kylen VanOsch, three-point shooting by Julie Prout, some great baseline shots by Janine Malcolm and some great fast break conversions and free throws by Maggie Roberts who led the scoring for the Panthers with 10. The loss puts the Panthers in fourth place with five wins and three losses on the season with two games remaining at home today (Wednesday). The senior girls, with only seven play- ers, travelled to Parkhill on the weekend to play in this years annual Optimist tournament. In their first game against Woodstock St. Mary Friday afternoon, the Panthers had a slow start against a great shooting squad, resulting in a 51-37 loss. In their consolation games they went on to defeat St. Joes from St. Thomas 37-26 and St. Armes from Clinton 45-24 to capture the consolation champi- onship. The championship was captured with strong team defence by all seven players at the tournament and great offensive scoring from Julie Prout who had 35 points on the weekend, and VanOsch who scored a team high 50 points in the three games. The team now gets ready to host St. Marys and St. Armes in their final league games at home today which will deter- mine their league playoffs matchups.
