Nov 14 By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH CORRESPONDENT ZURICH- The pre -Christmas family dinner for the resi- dents at the Blue Water Rest Home held Nov. 7 was once again a big success; the weather was beautiful for travelling. About 250 people enjoyed a delicious turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings. While people waited their turn to eat, musical entertainment was pro- vided in the lounge all afternoon. Everything was well organized and went quite smoothly. A job well done by all the staff and cooks and the several students who helped Patti to set up the tables, serve food and clean up afterwards. The women's auxiliary were selling chances on three draws which raised $180. First prize was a figurine won by Kaitlyn Masse of Zurich; second prize was a dollbed won by Jenny Spiteri (nee Stark) of Windsor; third prize was a grocery hamper won by John Paul Cantin of RR 2, Zurich. The warden's banquet was held at the Blue Water Community Centre in Zurich Nov. 5 with approximately 300 people attending. A deli- cious roast beef dinner with all the trimmings was enjoyed prepared by Jerry Rader and staff in honour of Bill Dowson and his wife Joyce. Correction: Brenda and Garry Koehler recently cele- brated their 25th wedding anniversary. Christmas shopping open house The Christmas shopping open house in Zurich will be held on Sun., Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Noel in the Village, Schilbe Hardware and Huntley House Florals, Kerry's Fancy and Jerry Rader Homestyle Catering. Pat and Jane Bedard along with Gail and Pat Cyr recently spent ten days visiting with daughter Tara Bedard in Budapest and enjoyed travelling around to see different places. Karl and Mary Regier returned home recently from a nice two-week vacation in Tokyo, Japan where they vis- ited with daughter Annette and Mark Stephan and chil- dren. They enjoyed seeing many different places and things while there. Berit Wallace of Goderich spent a couple days last week with her Zurich friends Jeanne and Gord Hay. Zurich Mennonite Church is holding a craft day in their church hall on Fri., Nov. 12 from 1 to 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Bring along knitting or any craft you want to finish. Pizza will be ordered for supper. If planning to attend please call ahead to Claudia Martin at 236-7099. The St. Peter's Catholic Women's League of St. Joseph have changed their plan and will now be having a spe- cial pancake breakfast in their parish hall on Sun., Nov. 21 after the 10:30 a.m. mass for all CWL members. The family of Janice and Ray Hartman, their children and spouses, grand and great -grand children had a lovely get-together on Sunday afternoon at St. Boniface Parish hall to celebrate her 70th Birthday Nov. 4. Wayne and Jody Schilbe returned home recently from a week's holiday in Calgary where they visited with friends. Happy birthday Happy birthday wishes to Ken Seyler, 60 years old on Nov. 1; to Rosi Rothenberg on Nov. 2 and Melanie Hunt, 13 years old on Nov. 2. Happy 16th birthday wishes to Philip Van Raay on Nov. 10 and to Heidi Klopp and Joe Boyle both on Nov. 11. Once again the fall supper at St. Peter's Lutheran Church last Saturday night was a big suc- cess. The roast pork meal with all the trim- mings was just delicious as were the home- made pies. A social hour with local entertainment was held following supper. It was so nice to see members from other churches in the community and surrounding area attending. Once again our community was saddened to hear of the loss of 20 -year-old Mirja Eilers suddenly in a car accident. Mirja is the daughter of Tanya and Gerhard Eilers. A large funeral mass was held at St. Boniface church on Nov. 2. Following the mass approximately 260 people attended a lunch at the Zurich Complex pre- pared by the CWL. The Lions Club are planning to have a turkey bingo on Wed., Dec. 1 at the Zurich Blue Water Community Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the game starting at 7 p.m. The next Lions Club dinner meeting is Wed., Nov. 10 at Erb's Country Kitchen by 7 p.m. New members are welcome (both men and women). On Sun., Nov. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be a dia- logue on depression and suicide by Peaceful Waters counselling services held at the Zurich Complex spon- sored by all the churches. Everyone is invited to attend. The St. Boniface bazaar on Saturday was well attend- ed. There were many lovely items on sale on the penny sale table donated by the merchants and CWL groups. Carmel (grocery ZURICH NEWS Guest gives talk onAfghanistan By Bev Campbell EXETER — The Hurondale Women's Institute was treated to a lovely dessert at the home of Lorraine Alexander to start off their October meeting. Following dessert vice-president Mabel Horn opened the meeting with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. Eleven members answered the roll call with their recollections of the farthest place they have travelled. Alexander introduced the guest speaker, Rev. Lillian Wilton who spoke to the group on Afghanistan. Rev. Wilton had slides, which explained her stay in Afghanistan during the 1970s doing missionary work. She was a nurse in an eye hospital and told of the lifestyle and customs of the country. Laura Sillery thanked Rev. Wilton with an appropriate gift - Reports were given concerning the area convention at Holmesville, as well as the 85th anniversary of the Crediton Women's Institute. A discussion on the F.W.I.O. hosting a provin- cial quilt show in September 2005 ensued and Marian Dougall offered to have a quilting bee at her home on Nov. 15 to finish up the group's quilts. Marilyn Pym read an article written by Dorothy Selves Peacock on `Experiences in Afghanistan' as a member of World Medical Mission. The next meeting of Hurondale WI will be held at June Stewart's home with Christmas as the theme on Nov. 24. Articles for the Children's Hospital will be gath- ered at this meeting. A social time followed the adjournment. Lodge cheese orders must be in by Nov 17 EXETER - At the Nov. 3 meeting of the Huron Rebekah Lodge a memorial service took place to honour departed brothers and sisters. The lodge is again selling cheese. Forms are to be in by Nov. 17 for December delivery. On Dec. 1, a special collection for the Christmas Bureau will be taken. Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. the combined Oddfellow-Rebekah dinner will be open to all mem- bers and spouses or friends. Dec. 7 the Huron Rebekahs will open lodge in Stratford after dinner in honour of the visiting president of the Rebekah Assembly, Marilyn Wilson. The Agriculture Society annual meeting will be held Thurs., Nov. 25 at the Hay Township Hall beginning with a pizza supper at 6:30 p.m. Please call Margaret ahead to order 236-4130. The meeting begins at 8 p.m. followed by a potluck dessert. All those who helped out at the fair are invited to attend. Master/junior bowlers Zurich Town and Country master/junior bowlers attended a tournament in Lucknow on Oct. 24. First place winners were Cheryl Regier, Kris Ducharme and Bev Cregan. Third place winners were Emily Ainslie, Dylan Fidler and Mike Cregan. The first place winners advance to Toronto on Nov. 13. Winners from the youth bowling combo team house tournament were girls, first place Justine Anderson, Cheryl Regier and Miranda Stoneman; bsoys, first place Austen Armstrong, Brendan Gill and Josh Windsor. These teams advance to zone finals in Kincardine Dec. 13. The president, secretary and treasurer tournament was held in Mount Forest on Sun., Oct. 31. Winners from Zurich were president, ladies first Sabrina Oesch; second, Donna Thiel. Secretary, mens second Paul Dickert; ladies third Elaine Weido. Treasurer, men's first Yvon Laurin.
