(photo/submitted) Shuffling begins in Varna Nov 10 By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA - The Stan Lee Club met in the Complex on Nov. 3 with 18 present and president Charles Reid presiding. The Club Christmas party will be Dec. 1 at the Complex at 6:30 p.m. with Sandra Turner catering. The $16 cost must be paid in advance, preferably before Nov. 24. There will be a Zone 8 executive meeting at the Varna Church Nov. 16 at 1:30 p.m. Shuffling will begin Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. Everyone enjoyed a few games of euchre with high winners Floyd McAsh and Margaret Hayter and con- solation winners Anna Keys and Elmer Hayter. The Huron County war- den's banquet in honour of Bill Dowson was held Nov. 5 at the Bluewater Community Centre in Zurich. The many digni- taries among the 280 guests included past war- dens toasted by Jack Coleman, MP Paul Steckle, MPP Carol Mitchell, visit- ing wardens and area councillors and county staff. As a special feature of the evening, warden Dowson's granddaughter Alysha Dowson sang, Grandpa. Later Mag Urlin and Bert Dykstra present- ed first lady Joyce and warden Dowson with gifts. Following Dowson's address, Alysha led in the singing of 0 Canada. Remembrance ceremony A Remembrance Day ceremony was part of worship at Varna United Church Nov. 7. During the service, a responsive Remembrance Day light- ing ritual spoke of remem- bering the past and embracing the future with hope and prayer for peace. Brianne Merner, Barb Consitt, Madison and Terri Louch helped in lighting candles. At the conclusion of the service, the congregation paraded to the village cenotaph where Floyd McAsh (R.C.A.F.) repre- senting the veterans, Earl Keller, representing the province of Ontario, Jim Ferguson representing the Municipality of Bluewater, and Charles Reid on behalf of the L.O.L., laid wreaths. The Last Post was played followed by a time of silence honouring fallen comrades, then the Reveille was played, and 0 Canada was sung. Congregational and com- munity congratulations are extended to proud VARNA NEWS OPP warns citizens about prizes with price tags HURON — Huron OPP recently responded to a report from a woman who received a letter confirming an award for a car. Police say the complete form did not say the recipient was an actual winner. It said her entry in a recent mail competition was judged to be 100 per cent correct in terms of all rules and regulations governing the award of the prize. The recipient was confirmed and guaran- teed eligible for the brand new 2004 Jeep Cherokee or the cash alternative of $45,000. It also says a tie break- ing puzzle form must be filled out and returned with $25 for processing and judging fees. The rules on the back of the form states the cost to compete in this con- test is the fee stated on the entry form and there will be a total of up to four tiebreakers in the contest. This form is the first of four and the final delivery of the prize will take place Sept. 30, 2006. A legitimate prize does not have to be paid for.
