Authentic Mexican food in Exeter
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Exeter has
its own taste of authentic
Mexican cuisine.
El Veracruz opened May
1 on Main Street.
Waitress Yolanda
Cortez, whose husband
Juan Perez owns the
restaurant along with her
brother-in-law Juan Cruz
and sister-in-law Elsa
Garcia, says El Veracruz
has its busy and quiet
moments.
Arriving to Canada from
Veracruz, Mexico, three
years ago, Cortez said she
and her family wanted to
establish themselves in
their new country and
work for themselves. They
also knew Canadians like
Mexican food and wanted
to offer something authen-
tic. Cruz said when she
and her family moved to
Canada, they missed
"real" Mexican food and
were disappointed with
the Mexican restaurants
here.
Opening a restaurant
was a natural decision
because Cruz's family also
had a restaurant when
they lived in Mexico.
Cruz said she has
received positive feedback
from customers, who have
been friendly and have
offered some ideas on the
menu.
"We are happy if they
are happy," Cruz says,
adding that the restaurant
already has its regulars.
"We have faith that we
will succeed."
Cruz and her family live
in London, although they

Roll up your sleeves
and contribute
Dear Editor:
I came across a letter to the editor in the Lakeshore
Advance (Nov. 3) from Joe Gleason blaming Zurich
businesses for lack of innovation, loss of business and
ceasing the efforts of the Village Prosperity Committee.
Now first things first — location does not matter as
much as attraction. People go to Venice because it is
Venice, or to Grand Bend not because it is located
close to Toronto, but because it is unique in Ontario.
The same was tried to attract people to Zurich through
the Christmas theme. Some people did work really
hard to make this work, yet most of Zurich sat back,
watched and complained instead of rolling up their
sleeves and contributing. We put road blocks in place
rather than asking "what can we do to help?"
I am one who is very concerned for
the environment and I see people dri-
ving all the way to Goderich, Exeter,
London and even Kitchener to
shop for groceries, hard-
ware and gifts, which in
my books in unnecessary
pollution, considering
that we have stores right
here in Zurich that are
eager to please and provide everyone with what their
needs may be at competitive prices. I may add that we
have a small store on the farm as well and keep some
of our products as low as break-even cost just in order
to provide everyone with what they need and like at a
fair price. Many of the merchants in Zurich do likewise
because they are about the community and know that
life is not cheap nor easy — they try to make buying
affordable for all!
Maybe instead of laying blame and pointing fingers,
it would be more helpful for people to shop locally, vol-
unteer their time and ask "what can I do to help?"
This is a good village. Let's make it a great village.

EVERY KITCHEN NEEDS A RECIPE THAT IS QUICK, EASY AND
TASTY! THIS ONE ASSEMBLES QUICKLY, BAKES AND IS SUPER
WARM OR COLD. YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE LOVE IT AND IT
NEVER LASTS AROUND MY PLACE UNLESS I SNEAK SOME AWAY
INTO THE FREEZER. THE RECIPE IS SO FADED IT IS HARD TO
READ, I MUST REDO IT TO ENSURE I KEEP IT.
TOFFEE BARS
I cup margarine
I cup brown sugar
I tsp. vanilla
2 cups flour
I cup semi sweet chocolate chips
I cup skor toffee bits ( or walnuts or pecans if preferred)
Cream together brown sugar and margarine and vanilla. Add
flour and beat. Stir in chips and toffee bits or nuts. Press into
ungreased 9x I3"pan. Bake at 350 deg. F. for 20-25 min. Cu
into bars while warm. So good. To store keep in an airtight
container and freeze if not going to be used in
the next day or two. ENJOY!

Exeter. They decided on
opening a restaurant in
Exeter because, travelling
through town one day,
they noticed the vacant
building on Main Street.
Cruz credits the building
landlord for being kind
and helpful with the
restaurant's opening.
She also thanks the com-
munity for welcoming the
restaurant to town.
In addition to authentic
Mexican food, Cruz said El
Veracruz is thinking of
offering Spanish lessons to
its customers, something
some customers have
requested.
They also may open
more restaurants in the
future.

PLAN H7.5.830 Five -Bedroom Family Home With its inviting veranda and bricked archway entrance, this five -bedroom family home will enhance any
neighbourhood. Immediately off the foyer, the living room is accented by a gas fireplace and double french doors that lead to the front porch.
Double pocket doors conveniently close off the adjoining dining room when required. Another set of french doors at the opposite end of the dining room
offer access to a large rear sun deck. The great room includes an efficient kitchen, separated from the dining room by a half wall, a breakfast area and a
generous -sized family room with gas fireplace and a bayed window. There is also a den on the main floor, privately situated between the family room and

house and has a bayed window, a walk-in closet and an ensuite with a soaker tub and a make-up counter. The house is 34 feet, 8 inches wide and 52
