(photo/Scott Nixon) holds the June Callwood By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF DASHWOOD — Nancy Becker says her recent June Callwood Circle of Outstanding Volunteers award is a tribute to her late friend. Becker, of Dashwood, has volunteered for the Victoria Order of Nursing Palliative Care Volunteer Program since 1992. She recently won the June Callwood award for her outstanding volunteerism. Becker says her experi- ences with her late friend Bernice inspired her to become a volunteer with VON. Diagnosed with lung cancer, Bernice passed away in March 1992, after a three-year battle with the disease. During that time, Becker and Bernice spent much time together. "She never gave up, and with her amazing sense of humour lived every day to the fullest," Becker says. After Bernice passed way, Becker decided to attend a VON Palliative Care class in the fall of 1992 to see if she could become a volunteer. For her volunteer work, Becker visits clients in their homes, long-term care facilities and hospi- tals. She also does bereavement visits and has co -facilitated VON bereavement support groups. Becker dedicates her June Callwood award to Bernice's memory. "It was an unexpected wonderful honour to receive this award," she said, adding volunteers don't do their work for recognition. The June Callwood Circle of Outstanding Volunteers award was established in 1994 by the Hospice Association of Ontario to honour hospice volunteers. It was named for Callwood, a volunteer, founder of the Casey House Hospice, communi- ty activist author and recipient of the Order of Canada. Becker said she will continue to volunteer for VON. Be wary of online buying and selling HURON — A Goderich woman recently contacted Huron OPP after receiving a fake money order dur- ing an online sale. Police say the woman received several e-mails from someone in Zurich, Switzerland who wanted to buy some drums she was selling on the Internet. The customer sent the woman a postal money order form for $6,000, well above the cost of the drums at $350. The man told the woman his wife was in the hospi- tal and a mistake had taken place. He wanted her to send the drums to his shipping agent and send the rest of his money to his doctor in Lagos, Nigeria. He said his wife has developed breast can- cer and the money is needed for her operation. A check of the money order at the local post office confirmed the money order was a fraud. According to police, this is another twist to the Nigerian Scam. If the woman had not looked into the money order by the time it would have come back to her 30 days later she would have been out $6,000 and the set of drums. BOUND BY DEBT? Funding increase for GBACHC By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — The Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre (GBACHC) received a financial boost from the provincial government Nov. 5. Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell and Lambton- Kent -Middlesex MPP Maria Van Bommel announced the centre will be receiving an investment of $292,961 this year. The funding is part of the additional $21 million in funding for the 54 CHCs across the province, Break-in EXETER — On Nov. 1 shortly after 9 a.m. OPP attended a break-in at the State Farm Insurance Office on Main Street in Exeter. Sometime between 3 and 4 a.m. someone forced open a window to the building. A safe was attacked and pried open in one corner. The person then stole approximately $350. The total loss to the company is approximately $1,400. Huron OPP is continuing the investigation. If you can help solve this crime call the Exeter OPP office or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS). according to a statement released by Mitchell's office, which added the funding will increase to $30.9 million by 2005- 2006. GBACHC executive director Dan Steinwald said the centre was advised about two weeks ago the additional funding would be coming. "It's partially new fund- ing and partially not," said Steinwald. "Of the $290,000, about $100,000 is earmarked for the salary administration pro- gram the Ministry started to fund two years ago that goes to revising salary levels for existing staff." The remaining $190,000, according to Steinwald, will go to pay- ing for a new physician to be hired, "which we argued for about five years ago and it has finally G.I.C.'s 20% A1J Gaiser er Inc. Knkeale EXETER - 235-2420 GRAND BEND - 238-8484 CLINTON - 482-3401 been approved." Another $7,500 will go to operating cost increas- es. Steinwald said the fund- ing will have no effect on the services the centre provides to Zurich or Dashwood. Regarding the funding for a new physician, Steinwald said GBACHC has to submit additional information to the Ministry and it would probably be January before it sees the money although they are advertising for a physician now. 400 Usborne Hibbert Mutual Fire Insurance Company Head Office Exeter, ON NOM IS1 235-0350 • Est. 1876 Residential Farm & Commercial Properties DIRECTORS & ADJUSTERS Joe Chaffe, R.R. 5 Mitchell Ron Feeney, R.R. 2 Dublin Larry Gardiner, R.R. 2 Staffa Jack Hodgert, R.R. 1 Kirkton Michael O'Shea, R.R. 3 Granton Morris Willows, R.R. 2 St. Pauls AGENTS 348-9705 3452360 3452678 2296152 2252600 393-6548 ROMP Wayne Mayer David Moore Joseph Dniac Barb Worden Exeter Dublin Mitchell Staffa 2351915 345-2512 3489012 345-2777 VItUlacYays * gte& Ceteeta&,f, f i, ??a: tQ, 7 oo per.--' C t. . cT & Oegleteahme4izs,aftei.tea, * etaati•c & wt4 ` (ora: t& .2:0c) • 977 C ee , * ettazi, ackm.a: CituvAriadi Caut c'w►rr, tg,. 9G,d4, I 9O & 7Y7a/a ii7e . o CAC} 9C -, da,(,a"rgett, 6144get On the shores of Lake Huron r o5T! 565.0 ?OO
