Sherwoods edge Listowel 5.4 Novice hockey action

HENSALL — The
Sherwoods picked up a
pair of tough victories on
the weekend, defeating
the Brussels Crusaders 6-
3 in Brussels Friday night.
Back in Hensall
Saturday night the
Sherwoods needed an
overtime goal from Chris
Downie to beat the
improved Listowel Jets 5-
4.
The Sherwoods opened
a 2-0 lead in the first
Friday night.
Jarrett Jeffrey scored on
a pass from Dave
Farquhar just over three
minutes in. Jeff
Finkbeiner scored on the
power play with just over
two minutes left in the
period.
Mike Johnson and
Farquhar assisted.
Brussels scored a pair in
the second to make it 2-2
after two.
The Crusaders made it
3-2 at the 13:55 mark of
the third.
The Sherwoods seemed
to wake up then. Hensall
scored three goals in a
three minute and two sec-
ond span.
Jeff Glavin scored the
first from Jeffrey,
Finkbeiner scored his sec-
ond on a beautiful feed
from Jeff Glover.
Chris McDonald then
scored from Glover and
Finkbeiner, to make it 5-3
with ten minutes to go.
With 8:37 left Andrew
Mauer was given credit
for the sixth goal as a
Brussels player inadver-
tently put the puck in his
own net. Jay Evershed got
the win in goal for
Hensall, beating his for-
mer team. Brussels had
five minor penalties,

while the Sherwoods had
two. Each team had a
fighting major.
Saturday in Hensall,
Listowel scored on its first
shot of the game, just 30
seconds in.
The Sherwoods replied
with three straight goals
to go up 3-1 after one.
JR Davies scored the
first two from almost the
same spot, at the side of
the net.
Mauer and Sean
McCann set up the first,
with Chris Downie and
Johnson assisting on the
second. Finkbeiner got
the third one from Jeremy
Geoffrey and Mark Bell.
The Jets then tied it up
in the first three and a
half minutes of the second
as the Sherwoods found
themselves down two
men for almost the first
four and a half minutes of
the second.
Johnson then scored on
the power play with nine
minutes left in the period.
Adam McCann and
Geoffrey assisted.
There was no scoring
until with 5:50 left in the
third the Jets tied it up.
With six seconds left
the Listowel goalie took a
roughing penalty for
punching Johnson in the
back of the head.
At 1:12 into the extra
period Sean McCann
found Downie in the slot
and he made no mistake
beating the Jet goal -
tender. Mike Bowerman
also assisted.
Andy Glavin kicked out
26 of 30 shots fired his
way. Hensall finished with
40 shots on goal.
The Sherwoods had 12
minors and the Jets had

Each team had a fight-
ing major, while Listowel
had a player tossed for
hitting from behind.
The Sherwoods' next
action is Saturday night
as they travel down
Hwy.4 for an encounter
with the newly formed
Lucan-Ilderton Jets who
are undefeated in their
first year of play.
Game time is 8:30 p.m.
The next home game for
Hensall is Nov 13 against
Brussels at 7:30 p.m.
