EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks rebounded last
week with a pair of strong
efforts beating Lucan 6-4
Wednesday night before
pounding North Middlesex
9-1 at home Friday night.
The wins give the Hawks
a 6-5-0 record for 12
points, four back of Lucan.
Exeter coach Derek
Mcnair said he was quite
happy with the effort he
received from his team all
week.
"Any time you go in and
you can beat the first
place team in their rink,
you have to play well to do
it," said Mcnair.
Wednesday night Exeter
took a 2-0 lead in the first
on goals from Joe Nesbitt
and Nathan Regier before
Kyle Roth cut the lead in
half with a power play
goal with 2:35 left in the
period.
But Jason Stuckless
restored the lead just 20
seconds later leaving the
Hawks up 3-1 going into
the second.
Matt Vlemmix increased
the lead to 4-1 midway
through the period before
Kyle Smith cut the deficit
to two goals two minutes
later.
The teams continued to
trade goals as Dan Moir
made it 5-2 before Lucan
struck for a pair by Trevor
Medeiros and Jeff Mclean.
But it was all Lucan
would get as Regier added
his second of the game
with a 1:22 left in the third
to seal the victory.
Friday night the Hawks
scored early and often as
Exeter Hawk Larry Northover drives into the North Middlesex zone Oct. 29 in
Exeter. Northover had a pair of assists as the Hawks rolled over the Stars 9-1.
(photo/PatBolen)
they built a 4-0 lead in the
first and cruised to a 9-1
win.
Stuckless opened the
scoring just over a minute
into the game with a
power play marker and
the Hawks never looked
back.
They added goals by
Regier, Jeff Smale and
another by Stuckless
before the period was
over.
Exeter kept the pressure
on in the second with
Daryl Bourne firing a shot
from the faceoff circle for
a 5-0 lead.
The Stars managed to
get on the board as Corey
Howard jammed a
rebound past Exeter
goalie Cam Becker but
that was all they would get
for the night.
Scott Davies immediately
restored the lead as the
Hawks threw the puck
around the zone on a
power play before Davies
made it a 6-1 score.
Justin LaPorte continued
the assault as he broke
through the middle for the
Hawks' seventh goal.
A change in goalies did-
n't help the Stars as
Nesbitt added his second
of the game and the
Hawks fourth power play
marker before Jason
Kerwin capped the scoring
with five minutes left.
Mcnair said the team is
starting to get where it
wants to be.
"Last week was basically
the first practice I had
with them, so it's going to
be an adjustment for them
as well,"
Exeter has three games
this week, all on the road,
starting with an 8:30 p.m.
game in Belmont tonight
(Wednesday) before visit-
ing Thamesford Nov. 6 at
8:30 p.m. and Lambeth
Nov. 7 at 7:45 p.m.
The Hawks' next home
game is Nov. 12 against
Lucan at 8:30 p.m. which
will be South Huron
District School night at the
Rec Centre.

LUCAN — The Lucan Ilderton Jets finished a per-
fect month of October with a 6-0 record as they
pounded the Brussels Crusaders 8-2 Oct. 30 in
Lucan.
The win let the Jets keep pace with the Hensall
Sherwoods, who sit one point ahead of them.
Durham remains in first with 15 points as of Oct.
31 while Clinton sits in fourth with 11.
Saturday night the Jets were tied 1-1 after the first
period on a goal by Matt McFarlane before taking
over in the second.
Paced by goals from Ben Dobbie, Jason Wilson,
Craig Black and Scott Phillips the Jets took a 6-2
lead.
Lucan Ilderton kept the pressure on in the third fir-
ing four more, including two more by Black for a
hattrick and one each from Andy Marshall and Bill
Byers.
The Jets outshot the Crusaders by a 65-26 margin.
Jets general manager Rob Andrews said the latest
signing by the team is Shaun Fairweather, who
played minor hockey in Lucan before playing with
Western for five years and in Texas last season.
Fairweather picked up two assists in his first game
Saturday night for the Jets.
Friday night the Jets will face visiting Goderich at
8:30 p.m. before taking on Hensall Saturday night in
Lucan at 8:30 p.m. for the first time.
SHDHS Panthers recapture WOSSAA title
EXETER — Tuesday and Wednesday
last week, the field hockey Panthers trav-
elled to Glencoe and recaptured the
WOSSAA crown.
Tuesday in pool play, they played St.
Thomas Parkside and defeated them 4-1
in a very one sided game.
Midway into the first half, Anne Gregus
opened the scoring from a Leanne
Cronyn pass, from a Shelby Musser
penalty corner.
Seven minutes later, Amber Caldwell
increased the lead from a Musser pass.
The score at the half was 2-0.
Midway through the second half,
Parkside managed to get one back, but
the two -goal advantage was shortly
regained as the Panthers awakened with
Kristin Ferguson scoring at 26 minutes
from good work by Kelly and Leanne
Cronyn. Two minutes later, Fergie, with
an assist from L. Cronyn, finished with a
opportunistic goal as she raised it over
the goalie to make the final score 4-1.
The South Huron defence did its usual
job of controlling the opposition forwards
and starting plays for the mids and for-
wards.
In the second game, SWOSSAA repre-
sentative, Sarnia Collegiate became the
victims of a Panther onslaught.
Seven minutes into the game, Shelby
Musser scored. She took the penalty cor-
ner, passed to Gregus, who passed to L.
Cronyn whose shot was neatly deflected
with a reverse stick to beat the goalie.
Five minutes later, Caldwell scored with
Ferguson assisting. SCITS made the
score 2-1, but Caldwell scored again at
the start of the second half to make it 3-1.
Gregus scored on a Musser free hit at
four minutes and again after 17 minutes
from Caldwell to complete the scoring
and take the final tally to 5-1.
The two victories placed the Panthers
in first position in their pool, with
Parkside second.
In the other pool, all three teams were
equal on points, but Medway had the best
goal difference, with Goderich (coached
by South Huron graduate, Ray Lewis)
being second.
In the semi-final on Wednesday, the
Panthers faced Goderich Although domi-
nating, South Huron did not score until
the 27 minute, with Anne Gregus scoring
with Kelly Cronyn assisting.
The score at the half was 1-0.
Three minutes into the second half,
Leanne Cronyn wrapped the game up
with a typical classical solo.
The game was never in doubt, although
all credit to Goderich for keeping the
game tight.
The final score was 2-0 in favour of the
Panthers.
In the other semi-final, Medway strug-
gled to defeat Parkside 1-0 in overtime.
The stage was once again set for the
annual Medway, South Huron, or
Cowboy, Panther WOSSAA final.
The game was played at a frenetic
pace, with end to end hockey.
The Panthers showed great skill and
determination in an emotional battle.
They took the lead after 11 minutes
with Anne Gregus providing the lead.
Both teams played aggressive field
hockey and with 30 seconds left in the
first half, Medway scored the equalizer
The second half, while no goals were
scored was full of tension and excitement
for both fans and players.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Two periods of overtime were played,
with still no score, but South Huron hit
the post with no luck in the rebound.
Seven and one half minutes of sudden
death overtime was next on the agenda.
South Huron really applied the pres-
sure and hit the woodwork again, then
with four minutes left, they seemed to
score a winner, and after some moments
the umpire disallowed the goal, saying
that it had not crossed the line.
However, the Panthers were not to be
denied and with one and one half min-
utes left in the period, Leanne Cronyn
applied pressure and was awarded a free
hit on the edge of the circle.
The rebound was pounced on by
Gregus, redirected and Ferguson shoved
it over the line to the elation of the South
Huron bench and fans.
A well deserved win in a tough battle.
The team now competes for the Ontario
Championship (OFSAA) in Waterloo at St.
Johns Kilmarnock School, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday.
The Panthers have been ranked num-
ber two in the province, with Burlington's
Notre Dame claiming the number one
spot.
The other teams in South Huron's pool
are number seven seed, Hillpark from
Hamilton, Crestwood from Peterborough,
and Centennial from Guelph.
The top two teams advance to the quar-
ter finals Friday afternoon.
The semi-final and final are Saturday.
