An empty building on Lucan's Main Street was the appropriate site for an announcement Friday that the provincial government will invest $270,000 in a downtown revitalization project in Middlesex County. "This is a positive announcement," Warden Ian Brebner said. "It will lead to the improvement of many of the main streets in Middlesex." "The McGuinty govern- ment is partnering with Middlesex County to strengthen this communi- ty's downtown core and create new economic opportunities," Agriculture Minister Steve Peters announced. He said citizens of Middlesex should be aware they have strong advocates for rural Ontario representing them in caucus. Peters said Lambton- Kent-Middlesex MPP Maria VanBommel, who is also parliamentary assis- tant to Municipal Affairs Minister John Gerretsen and chairperson of the rural caucus, has worked tirelessly to remove the kinks from the Rural Economic Development program. He added Perth - Middlesex MPP John Wilkinson is a strong voice on rural issues. "We have a great team at Queen's Park," Wilkinson said. "It keeps rural issues at the top of the agenda." The project is a partner- ship between the province, the county, Middlesex County Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) and Fanshawe College. "These initiatives will help encourage young people to stay here," Peters said. Six student positions will be created through the project. The investment will go towards building a strate- gic, long-term approach to downtown revitalization in the county. "The support of the provincial government ensures this project will have a great foundation on which to achieve our goals," CFDC general manager Cara Finn said. "As the first certified prac- titioner of the main street approach in Ontario, we seek to revitalize historic downtown areas creating commercial centres that invoke community pride and enhance where we work, live and play." Finn said the project will be rolled out over the next three years, bringing together business associa- Former Exeter residents win $12.5 million ETOBICOKE — After winning $12 5 million in the Oct. 22 Super 7 draw, former Exeter residents Doug and Phyllis Johnson went to a dealer and ordered their dream power boat, a 50 -foot Sea Ray ringing in at more than $1 million. According to a Toronto Star article, Doug, 62, a building superintendent and Phyllis, 64, a national director of broker services for Home Life Realty, also quit their jobs after col- lecting their cheque from the jackpot. The big win was a last laugh for Doug, who spent more than 35 years in construction before becoming a building superintendent at an Etobicoke condominium. He spends an average of $30 a week on lottery tick- ets and has no plans to stop, despite his big victo- ry. Prior to this win, his largest prize was $2,300. The new boat will be delivered in April, to replace the 32 -foot Maxim on which they now spend their summers. The Johnsons are also plan- ning a mass family vaca- tion in Mexico after Christmas. The next step will be to form a committee and hand out tasks to staff. VanBommel acknowl- edged the hard work of Finn and her colleagues at CFDC who put together the application for fund- ing. She said of 56 projects, only 13 were approved, adding while the govern- ment supports economic development in rural areas, it wants to support sustainable projects by providing them with seed money. "We want to be sure there will be results," she said. "We have a unique com- munity here," Wilkinson said. "It's important the government recognizes that."
