Huron Apothecary unveils expansion
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Huron
Apothecary customers
have noticed big changes
recently to the Main
Street business.
Owners Ernie and
Helen Miatello recently
put the finishing touches
on an expansion that
doubles the drug store's
size from 1,500 sq. ft. to
3,000 sq. ft. In addition
to providing some much-
needed additional space,
the expansion offered the
Miatellos the chance to
re -design the entire
store.
They held their expan-
sion celebrations last
week.
Ernie says he's pleased
with the expansion and
said it was necessary
because business had
increased, more room
was needed for the dis-
pensary and things were
getting cramped.
When the cafe and
bake shop next door
closed, the Miatellos
approached the build-
ing's owners about
knocking down the divid-
ing wall and expanding.
What followed was a
major job, as the wall
was four feet of brick.
Ernie describes Huron
Apothecary's new layout
as more "user friendly."
The cash register is now
at the front of the store,
providing room for a
newly -expanded dispen-
sary which allows Ernie
more room to talk to cus-
tomers.

There is also a new
semi -private counselling
area where personal
issues can be discussed.
The business has also
expanded its Home
Health line, which
includes things like
canes, bath grab bars
and stools. In the past,
the business didn't have
enough room to carry
everything the Miatellos
wanted to.
The new expansion
provides room for Huron
Apothecary to expand
some of its non -pharma-
cy items, although Helen
says health care and
meeting their customers
needs are still the busi-
ness's main goals.
"Our customer service
is our main focus," she
says.
Cards are now avail-
able at the store, as are
some boxed chocolates,
including low sugar can-
dies and sugar -free
chocolates for diabetics.
The Miatellos say the
expansion has brought
them "very positive"
feedback from cus-
tomers. Renovations
started in March and the
store remained open,
which proved difficult for
a while. They admit some
of the store front busi-
ness did suffer during the
renovations, but pre-
scriptions stayed stable.
Business has now
increased since the
expansion.
The expansion has also
meant Huron Apothecary
has hired an additional
employee and could be
looking for another part
timer.
Both Helen and Ernie
credit the store's "top-
notch" staff for being
faithful to the business —
Janice Webber has been
with the store since
1985, while Carole
Luther started in 1989.
The Miatellos bought the
business in 1990.

SOUTH HURON — On Oct. 20 shortly after 10
p.m. a citizen contacted police about the driving of
a person inside a small grey vehicle. An officer
working in South Huron on London Road south of
Exeter came across the vehicle wandering all over
the roadway. The officer turned around and
stopped the grey 2003 Toyota Sedan on Huron
Street. The officer approached the driver, found the
man was impaired and arrested him for the
offence. The man was taken for breath tests that
determined he had approximately twice the legal
limit allowed to drive.
A 38 -year-old Goderich man has been charged
with impaired driving and driving a motor vehicle
with over 80 mgs. He will attend court in Exeter
Dec. 16.
