(photo/submitted) Operation Impact 2004 results ORILLIA — As the Thanksgiving long weekend came to an end, so did Operation Impact 2004 and the results are in from the OPP. Despite the fact Operation Impact is the only traffic initiative that involves the collective enforcement efforts of police services across the country, police say a number of Ontario drivers ignored the rules of the road during the long weekend. Seven people were killed in six separate colli- sions on Ontario roads during the long weekend. Of the seven people who died, police say three of them were not wearing seat -belts, two of the fatalities involved speeding and alcohol was a contributing factor in at least one of the fatal col- lisions. Over the long weekend, the OPP handed out 84 drinking and driving charges to impaired drivers. The OPP also laid more than 4,500 speeding charges over the weekend. Absence of seat -belt use was another target area of enforcement during Operation Impact and the OPP laid a total of 347 seat -belt charges. The OPP would like to tip their hats to the many Ontarians who were conscientious about safe dri- ving habits over the long weekend. They would also like to caution everyone who was charged that breaking road safety laws is a recipe for tragedy. THAMES ROAD ABATTOIR We are licensed to process your WILD GAME!
