Lucan Ilderton Jets defeat Palmerston 2-1 SOUTH HURON MINOR HOCKEY
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Ilderton Jets took on the
Palmerston 81's Oct. 2 in
Lucan and came away
with a hard fought 2-1
win.
Nursing a 1-0 lead going
the third period, the Jets
ran into penalty trouble.
They were within one
second of killing off a two-
man advantage before the
81's broke through to tie
the score.
Jet's goalie Dave Riddell
came up big the next shift
though, stopping a break-
away to keep the score
tied. It was one of 40 shots
Riddell faced to lead the
Jets to the victory.
Riddell's save proved
crucial when Adam
Thompson scored the
game winner for the Jets
assisted by Matt
MacFarlane and Ben
Greig.
The Jets will play their
first road game Friday
night in Brussels at 8 p.m.
before returning home
Saturday to face Clinton at
8:30 p.m.

Fundamentals Skills
Program at Stephen
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The South
Huron Minor Hockey
(SHMH)Fundamentals
Skills Program will be
held once again this year
starting Oct. 14 at
Stephen Arena for players
born in 1996, 1997 and
1998.
The camp will run 16
sessions Thursdays from
6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the
cost of the camp is $80.
Organizing and running
the program again this
year is Dick Lord who
said the aim is to have
some fun learning basic
skills mainly on skating
backwards, balance and
puck handling.
Players will also spend
some time on passing
later in the program since
they do not handle the
puck enough in practice
times allocated.
"Today's players are not
spending the time away
from the rink playing
road hockey and pond
pickup hockey like we
used to. At the Atom age
(9-10), we get at least a
practice a week, and if we
miss that due to game
schedules, SHMH is very
good at making the prac-
tice time up. Having said
that, the 50 minutes at
the Atom age is not
enough to develop or
teach body checking, puck
control, passing, the start
of positional play, shoot-
ing skills, and skating
skills," said Lord.
The camp has been
moved from Saturday
morning to Thursday to
minimize the interference
with the players regular
schedule.
While the approach to
the camp isn't different
from the way others are
run, Lord said he does
incorporate things you
would not normally see at
practices, such as a soc-
cer game, Ride the Broom
and Shoot the Duck.
The difference teaching
to kids of that age,
according to Lord, is more
patience is required.
Evaluation of the
progress of the kids in
camp is done both visual-
ly and through feedback
from parents and coaches
of the players.
Lord said he is experi-
menting this year with
younger help.
"Andrew Pache and
Todd Lightfoot are hoping
to attend every session. I
have coached them in the
past and both are approx-
imately three years older
than the attendees. I
respect their talent and
the maturity they show."
To register for the camp
call Lord at 234-6396 or

dlord@cablety. on. ca.
Payment is due at the
first ice time and the first
30 children will be
allowed in the program.
