ABCA watersheds enter Level 1 low water advisory
AUSABLE BAYFIELD — Precipitation amounts for
the month of September were only about 30 per cent of
normal amounts over the Ausable River, Bayfield River
and Parkhill Creek watersheds. Combined with August
precipitation of only 50 to 60 per cent of normal and
above normal temperatures in September, streamflows
have dropped dramatically in the past several weeks.
Even the 10-12 mm of precipitation received in the
first weekend of October made no real impact on the
streamflows. Throughout most of the summer we have
seen precipitation amounts vary greatly from the north
to the south of the Ausable Bayfield watershed. The
Bayfield River watershed received more precipitation
than the southern portions of the Ausable and Parkhill
watersheds early in the summer but it is now showing
the effects of the last two dry months. Streamflows in
all areas are only 20 per cent to 25 per cent of normal
September values.
Based on these indicators, the Ausable Bayfield
Water Response Team (WRT) has agreed by telecon-
ference that all of the Ausable Bayfield watersheds

should be placed under a Level 1 Low Water Advisory
condition.
As a result of the Level 1 Low Water Advisory, WRT
members request that farmers, homeowners, indus-
tries and municipalities voluntarily reduce water con-
sumption by 10 per cent to prevent further shortages.
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority staff will
continue to monitor rainfall and streamflow data and
keep the public and municipalities informed of any
changes in watershed conditions. Should below normal
precipitation occur during the rest of October, the
Lower Ausable River and Parkhill Creek watershed
areas may enter a Level 2 Low Water Advisory condi-
tion.
