The scam started when a woman e- mailed the victim stating her parents had died and her money was tied up in a security company. Her inheritance was to the time of $18 million US and she need- ed some assistance to continue with her life. The woman from Nigeria, who said she was attending school in the United States, needed some assistance and if she helped she would give the woman 10 per cent of her inheritance. This went on for a couple of months when the correspondence changed and the e-mail said she was sending her a cheque for $15,000. When the cheque was received she was to send $10,000 of it to a pastor in South Africa and put the rest into another account. The cheque arrived and the woman would like to thank the Royal Bank who told her that it would take 30 days for the cheque to clear. If she had sent the money to the other person immediately she would have been out the $10,000. The cheque in question later bounced. The OPP wants to remind people not to respond to these scams.
