THAMES ROAD NEWS
Nutrition topic at meeting
By Bev Campbell
EXETER — Eight members attended the September
meeting of Hurondale Women's Institute held at the
home of Lois McFalls. After a dessert of fresh fruit and
tea breads, Marian Dougall introduced the guest speak-
er, Helen Miller, co-ordinator of the Good Food Box of
Huron.
Miller explained the operation of the Good Food Box
and brought a sample box so the members could see
the quality and variety contained in a Good Food Box.
There is a fee charged for the box ($14) but the quanti-
ty of food far outweighs the costs as Miller buys direct
from local farmers and sources. Miller was thanked by
McFalls.
Dougall then called meeting to order and had a read-
ing called `Smile'. The Mary Stewart Collect was recited
and roll call followed stating an 'old fashioned home
remedy.'
Final plans for the area convention, being held Oct. 5
at Holmesville, were discussed. An invitation was
received to attend the 85th anniversary party at
Crediton Community Hall Oct. 16. A donation to `Focus
High for WI' was given for the operating fund of Erland
Lee Museum Home. There was also a donation to the
Huron Adult Day Centre. A report of Tweedsmuir work-
shop attended by Fern Dougall was read. Marilyn Pym
gave a report of the fall rally held at Gorrie.
Business being concluded the programme continued
with the motto, `Nutrition, your best insurance policy'
and a nutrition contest conducted by Bev Campbell. The
next meeting will Oct. 27 when Rev. Lillian Wilton will
speak on Afghanistan.
Anyone wishing more information on the Huron Good
Food Box can contact Miller at 482-3416 or 1-877-837-
6143.
WHY FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN THIS FALL?
A lawn should be fertilized in the spring, summer
and fall, but the fall is probably the most
important time to fertilize lawn grasses. Fall
fertilizing stimulates a lawn to become thick and
strong rather than increasing the top growth.
In the fall, grass plants utilize fertilizer to
manufacture food while, due to the cool
temperatures, other plant processes are slowed
down. Some fertilizer is stored in the plant tissues
to produce a dense, green lawn early in the
spring.
A fall fertilizer supplies a homeowner with more
value for the money spent. More nutrients are
used in the direct maintenance of lawn density
and its green colour. Try a fertilizer application this
fall.
