Service held for Jamaican workers
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — A church
service and dinner was
held for Exeter's Jamaican
workers last week, an
event made more mean-
ingful after Hurricane Ivan
ripped through Jamaica
recently, killing at least 15
people.
Luckily, none of those
killed were related to the
80 local Jamaicans who
work at the Suntastic
Hothouse and Veri
Hydroponics. However,
many of their families suf-
fered much damage to
houses, property, build-
ings and livestock, accord-
ing to Suntastic vice-presi-
dent Friedhelm Hoffmann.
He added power is still
down in much of the
island and some workers
have not been able to get
in contact with all their
relatives.
Hoffmann said some of
the workers were
depressed after hearing
about Hurricane Ivan and
he spent some time coun-
selling them. Now, though,
he said the workers are
determined to keep work-
ing to make money so they
can help those back in
Jamaica.
As they only stay in
Canada for eight months
of the year, the Jamaicans
start going home at the
end of this week, while
others return to Jamaica
in November and
December.
To help its employees,
Suntastic gave the employ-
ees early vacation pay and
also gave some loans.
Hoffmann said from his
company's perspective, he
wants to make sure the
employees are happy and
comfortable. He stresses
that hiring the Jamaicans
isn't cheap labour, "it's
reliable labour." He said
they work many extra
hours.
Last Friday's service at
Trivitt Memorial Anglican
Church included a service
by Rev. William Ward as

well as readings from the
Jamaicans. A Jamaican
dinner was held after-
wards. This is the second
time the Thanksgiving ser-
vice has been held for the
Jamaican workers, and
they hope to continue the
tradition.
In his service, Ward said
he was overwhelmed by
the strength of the
Jamaicans and said the
church is grateful for their
gift of hard work.
"You have scattered the
seeds of hope in my
heart," he said.

Urquhart family for hosting the meeting and providing a
delicious snack.
