(photo/MarySimmons) EXETER — The Junior Girls' basketball team opened its regular season with a pair of wins Sept. 22 at Stratford Central Secondary School. The Panthers showed excellent poise and ball control in defeating Listowel 40-8 in the open- er. Tristen Caldwell led the way with 14 points while Janelle Erb and Sierra Douglas added eight points each. Tammy Coward, Stefanie Dietrich, Ashley McCarthy, Christine O'Rielly and Chantal Yearley added two points each. In the second game against the host Rams, the Panthers found them- selves tied at 25 with four minutes to play. Two clutch baskets by Melanie McCann put the Panthers ahead to stay and they won 34-30. Erb and McCann led the attack with 10 points each while Caldwell continued her strong play in the key, adding six points. Missy Pertschy also played well underneath, adding six points of her own. Douglas rounded out the scoring with two points. Coach Russ Watson said it was a great start for the season. The Panthers hosted a successful tournament Sept. 24 and 25. Teams from London and Woodstock as well as four area teams competed. The Panthers began their schedule against a strong Westminster team from London losing 39-14. Pertschy led the scorers with five points, Dietrich added four, and McCann had two. Caitlin Gaiser sunk a free throw to round out the scoring. In the second game against Goderich, the team improved their defensive play but lost 28 - 20. Pertschy again led the way with eight points, Douglas had five, includ- ing a three point shot, and Erb chipped in four points. Justine VanEsbroeck, McCann and Dietrich each added all important free Pigeon racing in Lucan LUCAN — Two young bird races last week closed out the 2004 racing sched- ule for the Lucan Homing Pigeon Club. Eleven members shipped 163 pigeons to Belleville, and 10 of them sent 113 birds to Brockville. The Brockville pigeons were released at 7:45 a.m. Lucan's Norm Hardy was thrilled when he clocked his first two birds at 13.26.40 p.m. and 13:28.18 p.m.. Since these birds had flown a distance of 483.691 km/h., Hardy knew he had a couple of "good" pigeons. However, he would have to contain his excitement until all the clocks had been read and the ranking on the racesheet had been completed. J. and Jus Veens from Arkona, very strong competitors, also knew they had contenders. They clocked three pigeons within 18 seconds at the 13.57 mark. These Veens birds were clocked a half hour later than the Hardy birds, but they had to fly 41 km/h further. As it turned out, Hardy's birds captured the top two positions at 1415.6810 metres/min. and 1408.9455 respectively. The Veens pigeons must have flown wing to wing or on top of each other: they recorded speeds of 1406.5078, 1406.3820, and 1405.3765 metres/min. Paul Finch placed sixth; Brendan Cunningham took position nine; Jim Whitworth was just behind Bert Veens Jr., who placed llth. Further down the list were W. McFadden from Mitchell and Tom Hardy from Lucan. A photo -finish does not describe the end -result of the Belleville race. A pigeon flown by J. Veens posted a speed of 1356.5848 metres/min. It won over Norm Hardy's bird which sped along at 1356.5842 metres/min. throws to complete the scoring. The Panthers came out roaring in their third game, defeating the St. Anne's Eagles 35 -19. Dietrich and Pertschy shared lead -scorer hon- ours with eight points each. Caldwell added six, Erb four, Douglas three, and McCann, Ashley McCarthy and Melissa Melick added two points each. Watson thanks all the volunteers who helped in the tournament. He would also like to congratulate the ladies on a great effort in their first tournament. Watson said the tourna- ment was a great learning experience and he looks forward to using that learning in their game Sept 29 against F. E. Madill.
