Exeter Fury end season with 4-iwin
EXETER — The Exeter Fury con-
cluded their season on a positive
note Sunday by defeating Woodstock
at the Community Park in Exeter.
The win was the first for the Fury
since the middle of June and ended
an 11 game winless drought.
Marty DeBruyn put on another
dominant performance scoring all
four goals.
Exeter started strongly by putting
pressure on the Woodstock defence.
Pete McAllister intercepted a pass
in the Fury end and Ryan Carroll
picked up the loose ball and sent a
long pass to DeBruyn who walked in
and held off the defender to give the
Fury an early lead.
Shortly after, defender Shawn
McFalls gave a short pass to
DeBruyn who chipped a left foot
shot into the far corner of the net to
give the Fury a two -goal cushion.
The Fury kept the Woodstock
strikers from mounting any offense
with 10 year veteran Ryan Hern
playing a strong game at the stopper
position.
DeBruyn completed the hat trick
when he intercepted a free kick in
the Woodstock end and headed in
on a breakaway.
He made no mistake by firing the
shot past the frustrated keeper.
The Fury started the second half
strongly again, almost scoring on a
nice cross from Mike Nedza to
DeBruyn whose shot out of the air
went over the net.
Exeter used their speed to keep the
Woodstock defenders on their heels.
Fragiskos Fragiskatos and
McAllister were hustling all game
and getting themselves open for
some long runs onto the ball.
Ryan Carroll was everywhere in
the midfield using his slide tackles to
create many turnovers.
Fury keeper Nathan Holmes came
off his line on a few occasions to
punch the ball out of danger keeping
his team in front.
After Woodstock broke the shutout
DeBruyn scored one of his classic
goals.
Brian Brand and McAllister
worked to get the ball to DeBruyn
who carried the ball for quite a dis-
tance with a couple of defenders on
his heels.
The Fury striker used his size to
knock the defender into the keeper
while maintaining control of the ball.
DeBruyn walked past the two play-
ers on the ground and put the ball
into the empty net for 4-1 Fury lead.
Jason McFalls nearly added a fifth
goal when he took a pass from
Nedza but his shot sailed high over
the bar.
DeBruyn tallied 31 goals this sea-
son and will win the Second Division
scoring title, his third scoring title
with the Fury and his fifth straight
season of 30 goals.
The win gave Exeter a record of 5-
9-4 for 19 points.
As of press time the Fury were not
sure if they were going to be demot-
ed to Third Division next season as
they await the final standings.
"It was a nice way to end a difficult
season and the performance Marty
put on today was amazing," said
Fury spokesman Jason McFalls.
"Marty might not be back next sea-
son but it has been a pleasure hav-
ing him as a teammate the last five
years."

SARNIA — Former Exeter resident Bill
Fairbairn will be inducted into the Sarnia
Lambton Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 2.
Fairbairn, 53, will be inducted in the amateur
category for his career in baseball and hockey,
which included Allen Cup championships in
1979 and 1981 with the Petrolia Gibbons
Squires as a defenceman.
Fairbairn said he found out a couple of
months ago he had been selected for the hall.
Although he knew his name had been put for-
ward to the selection committee for considera-
tion, he said he was still surprised when he was
selected.
Fairbairn grew up in Exeter playing minor sports and
moved to Sarnia when he was 18 for a tier two tryout
and ended up staying in the area.
He played fastball with the Senior A London
Dukes of the Ontario Fastball League as a cen-
tre fielder.

onships playing Senior A fastball in Sarnia in

Elder suits up with
St Mike's Majors
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
TORONTO — Former
Exeter Hawk Travis
Elder is suiting up for
the OHL St. Mike's
Majors this year, hoping
to repeat the champi-
onship season the
Hawks had last season.
The Majors opened
their season on
the road Sept.
24 with a 3-3
tie against
Barrie before
tying
Peterborough
1-1 at home.
Elder was
drafted in 2003
and attended a
rookie camp in
June that he
said went well.
The main camp for the
team was held Sept. 2
and Elder was signed
immediately after. He is
going to St. Michael's
College school.
The Majors went to the
conference final last
year and Elder said
while the team hasn't
changed over many
players, a new coach,
Bud Stefanski, is behind
the bench with a differ-
ent style.
"Last year the coach -
wanted everyone to fill
the lanes, but this year
Bud wants everyone
going to the puck.
I try to play the body
as much as I can and if
the puck comes to me I
try to put it in the net."
The goal of the team,
said Elder is making it
back to the finals and
getting a trip to the
Memorial Cup in
London.
He added he wanted to
get off to a good start. "I
need to get some points
early. I got a goal
in an exhibition
game and that
got the monkey
off my back."
The biggest dif-
ference between
the two leagues,
according to
Elder, is the
speed of the
game and the
players and one
thing he is working on is
adding some size.
"Everybody is equally
as fast, and you just
have to be that much
faster. The play goes a
lot quicker and you just
have to think faster."
The success of the
Hawks last year is
another plus for Elder,
who said the coaches
were happy he knew
what it took to win and
they were hoping it
would carry over to this
season.
The Majors take on
Owen Sound tonight
(Wednesday) at 7 p.m.
and Oshawa Friday at
7:30 p.m.

Panthers cruise to 5-0 and 8-0 field hockey wins
EXETER — South
Huron defeated St. Marys
5-0 in the season opener
of the Huron Perth
Championship Sept. 21.
The Panthers opened
the scoring early when
Shelby Musser converted
an Anne Gregus cross
after only 45 seconds.
The locals continued to
press and Leanne Cronyn
added a second after 27
minutes. The score at
the half was 2-0.
Four minutes into the
second half saw Gregus
convert on a penalty cor-
ner from Cronyn.
Three minutes later
Gregus got her second
when she scored with
Musser assisting.
Fifteen minutes into the
half saw Cronyn score
with a brilliant solo
effort.
In the second game of
the day, the Panthers
hosted St. Annes and
ended up winning 8-0.
Three minutes into the
game Gregus continued
in fine form as she con-
verted a Musser pass.
Nine minutes later,
Cronyn converted a
penalty corner as the
goalie covered up the
ball.
Gregus scored a second
goal after 24 minutes
with Musser dishing up
the ball from a penalty
corner.
In the second half it
was all South Huron as
Cronyn added her second
after only two minutes.
Gregus added two more
to complete the scoring
with Cronyn and Amber
Caldwell assisting.
The girls played in an
invitational tournament
at the weekend in
Waterloo.
In the firs game, last
year's OFSAA champs,
the Notre Dame Fighting
Irish from Burlington
provided the opposition.
The game was fiercely
fought, with end to end
hockey and was very
entertaining for the spec-
tators.
The first half ended 0-0
with the Panthers holding
the edge.
Two minutes into the
half, the Panthers took
the lead on a goal scored
by Cronyn and assisted
by Amber Caldwell.
The locals continued to
have the upper hand and
should have increased
the lead, but it ended at
1-0.
The second game was a
rematch of last weekend,
but of longer duration,
with SJK of Waterloo
providing the opposition.
The game was like the
first game of the day with
both sides showing
promise and danger.
The score at the end of
the half was 0-0.
The game was blown
apart midway through
the half, with Cronyn's
scoring prowess.
On 16 minutes, she con-
verted a Musser penalty
corner, with a blazing
shot the defence could
not handle.
Three minutes later she
repeated the same type
of shot to put the game
safely away.
The final game was
against Waterloo -Oxford
and resulted in the
Panthers' first loss.
The score was 1-0 with
the Duckies converting a
penalty stroke.
Both teams played skill-
ful, determined field
hockey and was the type
of game the team needed
before championship
time.
