AVON MAITLAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
What's ahead for this school year?
As another school year begins, I thought I'd outline
some of the issues, changes and opportunities ahead for
the Avon Maitland District School Board. A number of
these ideas were presented by Meg Westley, Chair of the
Board when she spoke to principals, vice -principals and
POLICE BRIEFS
123 traffic tickets issued
HURON — Officers continue to deal with traffic prob-
lems in the county. Officers were able to issue 123
traffic tickets for drivers failing to follow the rules of
the road. Of these, 107 speeding tickets were issued,
two for disobeying a stop sign and failing to stop, two
for insurance, two for careless driving, two for liquor
violations inside the vehicle, one each for an improper
turn, licence plates not validated, failing to yield, fail-
ing to stop when directed, driver's licence, failing to
drive in the marked lane, class G1 holder violation
condition and improper bike lighting.
This leads up to the seat -belt campaign, which starts
immediately.

SOUTH HURON — On Sept. 20 at 9:15 a.m. the OPP
was called to investigate a break-in on Sunshine Line
in the Usborne ward of South Huron.
The officer learned sometime two days before some-
one entered an unlocked door of the residence while
the owner was away. A Toshiba Satellite A20 laptop
computer valued at $2,000 was stolen.
Huron OPP is continuing the investigation. If you
have information about this break-in call the Exeter
OPP office or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-
8477(TIPS).

Berth dearth: In 1921, the number of live births
per 1000 Canadians was 23.9 with the mother's
average age of 23.8. In 2002, it was 10.5 with the
average mother's age being 27.7. Over 40% of
these are over the age of 30. Gone are the days of 7 or 8 kids in the
family. Today, the average number of children is 1.5 for all women
between the ages of 15 and 49.
The Australians have invented a syringe that guarantees one use
only. It has an automatic disabling feature which causes the needle
to retract into the body of the syringe after use. Neat idea to reduce
the chances of accidental needle -stick injury.
September is Arthritis Month. People suffering from chronic pain like
those with arthritis may not eat as well and suffer from malnutrition
and weight loss. It is important to have adequate pain control to
avoid these situations.
Screening tests are costly but are important predictors of possible
disease. For example, women over 40 should have a fasting blood
sugar done every three years to check for diabetes. Rates for Type 2
diabetes (non-insulin dependent typel are rising in Canada. Early
diagnosis of diabetes is very important.
After leaving the doctor's office and pharmacy, people often have
questions they forgot to ask. If your question is related to your
medication please call and ask us. And remember, there are no silly
questions about medications.

staff at the System Leader's Day in August, held at the
Board offices in Seaforth.
First, there are changes in personnel in many of our
schools, which I'm sure if you are a parent you
are well aware of. Not only are there staff trans-
fers between schools, but this year the board has
hired more than 50 new people as teachers, prin-
cipals, and support staff. I'm sure these individu-
als will bring new ideas and experiences that will
benefit our students as well as their staff col-
leagues.
Second, this year will be significant for our
Board because nearly all of our employee groups
will be seeking new employment contracts that
have recently expired. Though this process
inevitably brings some uncertainty, our Board is
committed to reaching fair settlements with all of
our education partners so our students continue to
receive the high quality of education they are accus-
tomed to.
Third, our Board has a new Mission Statement: "To
unlock the potential in all of our learners." This mission
statement states what we are trying to accomplish as a
school board and reflects that fact that each individual
has unique potential that needs to be realized. The mis-
sion statement also pertains to "all of our
learners" which includes our students, our
staff, as well as trustees, and others who
might be involved in education.
Finally, this year our Board will be seeking
community input as we strive to achieve one
of our key goals: "To promote the develop-
ment of positive citizenship qualities in our
students." We will be developing common
qualities that we as a community can all agree
are important and fundamental to good citi-
zenship. Our schools will use these common
EDUCATION qualities as a tool to promote character build -
MATTERS ing and positive citizenship.
As we face these changes, challenges and opportuni-
ties, I know that if we all work together with the com-
mon goal of ensuring our children receive the best edu-
cation possible, then 2004-2005 will be a great year in
education in our community.
