Local groups join shoreline clean up
AUSABLE BAYFIELD - Local commu-
nity groups are taking part in the Great
Canadian Shoreline Clean Up Sept. 18.
After last year's success, the Friends of
the Bayfield River are gearing up for
their second year of sprucing up the
Bayfield River. The Friends will be meet-
ing at 10 a.m. at two locations: Bayfield
South Beach - south pier at Bayfield or
Bayfield River beach - Highway 21 just
north of Bayfield.
"Last year, 55 volunteers helped the
Friends pick up 36 bags of garbage
including 1,200 beverage containers,
food wrappers, diapers and thousands of
cigarette filters," says Mari Veliz, ABCA
Healthy Watersheds Specialist.
The Friends of the Bayfield River have
now inspired other like-minded groups in
the area. There will be clean ups at the
Pinery Provincial Park, Ailsa Craig and
Denfield.
The Friends of the Pinery will meet at
the Visitor Centre in the Park at 10 a.m.
The Ailsa Craig group will meet at the
Lions Park in Ailsa Craig at 10 a.m. The
Nairn Creek Project will meet at the Park
in Denfield at 9 a.m.
Increased participation in this year's
Clean Up is part of an ongoing trend that
Eastern National Co-ordinator Lisa
Richardson is quite excited about.
In 2003, litter from 960 kilometres of
Canadian shoreline was picked up. This
amounted to 50,000 kilograms of trash.
There were over 20,000 volunteers at
477 sites across all provinces and territo-
ries.
According to Richardson, there were
twice the number of volunteers in 2003
than 2002. This year, Richardson expects
even greater attendance as there are
more registered volunteers for the 2004
Clean Up event than last year. The
Canadian event is part of an international
effort to reduce marine debris.
All groups are looking forward to
spending a couple of hours to improve
local waterways and meet neighbours. If
you would like to attend one of the Clean
Ups, please remember to dress in appro-
priate clothing and suitable footwear as
some walking will be required. Garbage
bags and gloves will be provided.
For more information on the local Great
Canadian Shoreline Clean Up, please call
Mari Veliz at the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority at 519-235-2610.
