Knee with Nationals
Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LONDON — A member
of last year's champi-
onship Exeter Hawks
hopes to repeat the experi-
ence with another team
this season.
Justin Knee will be cen-
treing a line for the
London Nationals this sea-
son as they try to avenge
last season's final round
series loss to
Chatham.
London has one
win in its first
three games of the
season, with a 4-3
win over
Leamington, a 7-1
loss to Chatham
and a 5-4 loss to
St. Thomas.
Knee was also
drafted by the
OHL Plymouth Whalers in
May.
Knee, age 16, attended
the team's under -17 camp
this summer.
He was then invited to
the mini camp and was
signed the first day by
Nationals president, gen-
eral manager and head
coach Rene Vilon.
He is one of two 16 year
olds on the team.
Knee said the team is
focused on its goal this
year of making it back to
the finals after being up 2-
0 in the finals to Chatham
before losing in six games.
The team has also added
Thomas Division rookie of
the year and scoring
champion Matt Bartoch.
Knee will be centreing
the Nationals second line
and says he had no prob-
lem fitting into the lineup.
He said one of the main
strengths of his game is
knowing where other play-
ers are on the ice.
One of the
biggest differ-
ences between the
two leagues,
according to
Knee, is the speed
of the players and
his foot speed is
something he is
trying to improve.
Knee said he
was surprised
when he was
signed on the first day of
the mini camp.
He added he hasn't felt
any nervousness yet and is
looking forward to the sea-
son and helping the team
in its goal of making up for
the disappointment of last
year's finish.
The Nationals have a
pair of games this week,
visiting Tecumseh Friday
at 7:30 p.m. and return -
home against St. Marys
Saturday night at 7:30
p.m.

Panthers open field -
hockey season
WATERLOO — The
South Huron District High
School Panthers field
hockey team opened their
season on the weekend
with a tournament in
Waterloo.
In the first game the
Panthers played St.
Thomas Aquinas and won
1-0, with Amber Caldwell
scoring at nine minutes,
from a Shelby Musser
pass.
In the second game,
South Huron defeated
Turner Fenton 5-0.
Caldwell scored the first
after seven minutes, again
from a Musser cross, and
added a second four min-
utes later.
Rookie Janita Pfaff
scored her first career
goal, with Anne Gregus
getting the assist.
Gregus notched the
fourth goal 16 minutes
into the game.
Just before the end of the
game, Leanne Cronyn
scored from a fine solo
effort.
In the third game the
Panthers defeated MM
Robinson 2-0.
Caldwell scored both,
one at four minutes with
Cronyn assisting and the
other on 16 minutes with
Kristen Ferguson assist-
ing.
In the final game of pool
play, the girls defeated JF
Ross 3-0.
Kelly Cronyn scored the
first just three minutes
into the game.
Caldwell added a second
at 16 minutes on a Musser
pass.
Gregus scored the third
at 19 minutes from a Kelly
Crony pass.
Winning the pool, the
girls advanced to the semi-
final where they played St.
Johns Kilmarnock (this
years OFSAA host).
The game was played at
a fast pace, with SJK con-
trolling the play in the first
half and South Huron con-
trolling in the second.
With one minute left to
play in the game, SJK won
a penalty corner.
The Panthers could not
clear their zone and SJK
scored the winner.
This was a great start to
the Panther season and
allowed all players the
chance to sharpen their
skills and for the rookies to
see what the game is all
about.
The team opened their
Huron -Perth season in
Exeter Tuesday.
