Plot tour takes in corn and soybean fields
By Mary Simmons
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON —
Borland Farm Service
hosted a customer appre-
ciation night and plot tour
Sept. 13.
The plot tour took in
four fields of corn and soy-
bean varieties. NK Seeds
territory rep Eric Richter
and agronomist Dave
Townsend discussed the
concerns of farmers about
this year's crop and spoke
about the importance of
having a good portfolio for
the land being used.
Farmers listed maturity,
rust, mould and firing up
as some of the areas of
concern.
Townsend said frost can
be an issue, but farmers
also have to be aware that
five consecutive days
below 10 C can be harm-
ful to the crops. Plants
freeze at -3 C, but the
chilling effect will shut
corn down within 3-4 days
if the temperature drops
below 5 C.
He said soybeans are
more sunlight driven than
corn and a frost can cause
the crop to green out.
Townsend said herbi-
cides will affect corn roots
and farmers should design
their program to fit the
plant variety.
"There is no more
important decision you
make each year than the
genetics you're going to
put in your field," Richter
said.
He said there is no per-
fect variety and it takes
time to find the right seed
for the soil conditions.
"Try not to get forced
into buying at a discount
price," he said.
He advised farmers to
plant three to four vari-
eties, consider the soil
type and conditions and
look at the history of dis-
ease in the field. He said it
is also the challenge of
farmers to make sure the
roots are healthy.
Back at Borland Farm
Services Mery Erb of
Huron Ag Vise spoke to
the group about the Farm
for Profit system, wheat
varieties and planting tips
for wheat farmers.
He said in order to get a
good yield of soft white
wheat farmers should be
planting 160 pounds/acre.
Soft red wheat has a bit
better yield and 150
pounds/acre should be
planted.
Erb said it is easier to
get rid hard red wheat
and it will yield 12 bushels
more per acre than soft
red, so it is more prof-
itable.
He said winter wheat
planted after Oct. 20 is a
Male arrested for assault

ment complex on Victoria Street in South Huron.

unlocked apartment and confronted him about a theft in
the area. The men left, returned a short time later and
more words were exchanged.

three males was pushed towards the door and then
turned and punched the victim in the face several times.
According to police, the victim has been diagnosed
with a broken eye socket and nose.
Later that afternoon the accused male turned himself
into police.
An 18 -year-old South Huron man has been charged

poor risk since farmers
will lose two-thirds to one

plant after Oct. 5.
Don Good of New
Hamburg spoke about
market and weather
trends.
He said he takes his
opinions from what he has
learned in the markets.
Good said he does not
believe in the theory of
global warming because
weather cycles indicate a
cooling effect. He said the
weather has grown cooler
since industrialization,
adding record heat tem-
peratures have not been
broken since 1936 and
this has been the third
coldest August on record.
"All markets react to the
lunar cycles," he said.
"What has happened in
the past will happen
again. It's all the cycles."
He predicted corn prices
will be low at the end of
the month and swing high
in December. He expects
soybeans to do the oppo-
site and said there is
potential for upward
movement in lean hogs
and cattle.
7 Deadly Mistakes That Will
Cost You Thousands
When You Sell Your Home.
LONDON - A new report has
just been released which
reveals 7 costly mistakes that
most homeowners make when
selling their home, and a 9 Step
System that can help you sell
your home fast and for the most
amount of money.
This industry report shows
clearly how the traditional ways
of selling homes have become
increasingly less and less effec-
tive in today's market.
The fact of the matter is that
fully three quarters of home -
sellers don't get what they want
for their home and become dis-
illusioned and worse - financial-
ly disadvantaged when they put
their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most
homesellers make 7 deadly mis-
takes that cost them literally
thousands of dollars. The good
news is that each and every one
of these mistakes is entirely pre-
ventable.
In answer to this issue, industry
insiders have prepared a free
special report entitled "The 9
Step System to Get Your Home
