September is the time of year when children
bring home more than homework from school.
It's head lice season. By carefully inspecting your
child's hair about a 1/4 inch from the scalp, you
might be able to see the 'nits' cemented to the hair shaft. There are
various methods of treatment from manual removal with a fine-
toothed comb to chemical means.
By the way, head lice can attack anyone. It's not a sign of poor
hygiene. You can't catch it from animals (lice do not live on other
animals). But they are transmitted by other humans so people
shouldn't share headphones, hats, hairbrushes, bike helmets, toys
or bedding.
Besides treatment with medication, there are other things you can
do to ensure a lice -free household: vacuum thoroughly all rugs,
carpets, mattresses and upholstered furniture. Wash personal items
in hot water above 130 deg. F (54 deg CI for 10 minutes. Soak
combs, brushes in hot water (same temperature as clothes) for 10
minutes. Bedclothes that cant be washed should be dry cleaned or
put into sealed plastic bags for two weeks.
It seems that girls are affected more than boys because girls tend to
share combs and brushes with each other more than boys.
