nurse Marnie Garrett and
project supervisor Nancy
Wai say it is "extremely
important" for residents to
take a good look at medi-
cines to increase safety in
their homes.
"It's as simple as check-
ing all the places that
medicines are stored and
cleaning out those that are
out -dated and no longer
needed," they explained.
"Keeping, taking or shar-
ing old medications can
lead to serious injury such
as falls and poisonings
both for older adults and
children."
Here are some steps res-
idents can take:
• clean out the expired
and out -dated medicines
including prescription,
over the counter and
herbal medications or vita-
mins;
• if you don't know if a
drug is still good, check
with your pharmacist;
• place medicines in a
bag and bring to partici-
pating pharmacies;
• bring the bag to a
pharmacy for safe and
free disposal;
• medication in your
