Express come close at OBA's
LISTOWEL — Exeter
Express spokesman Joe
Fulop said there was an
expression from his
youth which stated "a
team that won't be beat,
can't be beat."
Such was the spirit of
the Express as they bat-
tled for the OBA Senior
'D' championship in
Listowel over the week-
end.
Exeter 8 South
Woodslee 7
The Express started the
weekend with a tough
game against South
Woodslee. The teams
battled to a 7-7 draw
through the regulation
seven innings.
The Express scored a
run in the third with key
hits from Cory Burtch
and Scott McCutcheon.
Hits from Adam
Leppington, Vic Oliveira
and Ryan Fairful led to
three more runs in the
fifth and Aaron
Patterson, Bobby Grant
and McCutcheon had sin-
gles during the two -run
rally in the sixth.
Dan Masse threw the
ball hard and allowed
only five hits but had
problems matching the
umpire's strike zone and
had eight walks.
South Woodslee scored
single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings and
burst forth for four more
in the six.
They added their final
run on an error in the
seventh.
The Express dealt with
the disappointment of not
clinching the game in the
seventh by rallying for a
run in the eighth on three
walks and a hit by
Patterson.
Derek Masse struck out
the side and picked up
the victory.
It was so far so good for
the Express, whose next
game would be Saturday
morning in Listowel.
Clarksburg 4 Exeter
2
Lonnie Hawke pitched a
superb game allowing no
earned runs over five
innings and relievers
Derek Brown and Jeff
Green allowed one run
each.
The problem in this
game was the Express
could only muster two
hits, both by Fairful.
They did score single
rims in the first and sev-
enth innings and had
runners on first and third
in the seventh with one
out but were unable to do
the job.
Exeter 8 Listowel 4
Game three was against
league rival Listowel.
The Express had
defeated them on five dif-
ferent occasions during
the year but this game
was different.
Listowel was able to
score three runs in the
fourth and one in the
sixth off Exeter's ace
Derek Masse.
All the Express could
muster was a two -run
homer by Grant and
Marty Merner had a sin-
gle in this innning as
well.
Exeter rallied for six
runs in the bottom of the
seventh with hits by
Patterson, Adam
Leppington, Dan Masse
and Nick Regier.
The telling blow was a
grandslam homerun by
Fairful.
Masse won his second
of the tournament which
led to a rematch with
Clarksburg.
Exeter I2
Clarksburg 7
Adam Leppington
staked the Express to a
one -run lead with a first
inning homerun and
Exeter added to its lead
with five runs in the
third.
The runs in the rally
came off hits from Aaron
Patterson, Fairful, Dan
Masse, Hawke and
Oliveira.
Clarksburg scored one
in the first, five in the
fourth and one in the
sixth to take a one -run
lead going into the sev-
enth.
But the Express
responded with a rally of
six runs. Fairful, Masse,
Patterson with two and
Regier led the parade
and Merner picked up
the win in relief.
Exeter 8 Thorold I
Game six with Thorold
was a tense contest with
Exeter holding a one -run
lead going into the sev-
enth inning as Merner
scattered five Thorold
hits.
Singles by Masse and
Hawke led to the first
Exeter run in the second
and they added one more
in the fourth on hits by
Hawke and Regier.
The big rally of six runs
came in the seventh to
pick up an 8-1 victory.
Several walks and hits
by Patterson, Adam and
Aaron Leppington, two
hits by Vic Oliveira and
one from Dan Masse led
the way.
Glanbrook l0 Exeter
8
Game six placed the
Express against
Glanbrook, which they
lost by a score of 10-8.
Exeter rallied for one
run in the first, four in
the fifth and two in the
sixth.
They also had the tying
runs on base in the bot-
tom of the seventh as
Fairful just missed a
game winning homerun.
A two-way faulty call by
the base umpire led to
Aaron Patterson being
tossed from the game
which along with the lack
of quality pitching and
some shoddy defense led
to the defeat.
Six Exeter pitchers
allowed 10 runs on hits.
The Express trailed as
badly as 7-1 in the sec-
ond inning before rally-
ing to almost pull out the
victory.
Exeter hitters included
McCutcheon, Grant and
Fairful with two each and
Dan Masse, Hawke,
Oliveira, Regier and
Merner with one each.
Fulop wrapped up the
weekend and the season
by saying, "The Express
had excellent pitching
over the weekend with
two wins each for Merner
and Derek Masse plus
good performances from
Dan Masse and Hawke.
"Dan and Derek solidi-
fied their positions as the
two best pitchers the
team has had over the
life of the franchise."
