Don't forget firemen's breakfast Sat. Sept. 11

VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA - On Wed., Sept.
2 over 60 Varna commu-
nity residents met at the
Complex for a wrap-up of
all committees from the
sesquicentennial Open the
Door in 2004%0. A social
time was held from 5 " 6 .
Pastor Elly Van Bergen
led with the Blessing fol-
lowed by Wayne Miners
singing the
Lords
Prayer.
Everyone enjoyed a deli-
cious potluck supper.
Sandra Turner chaired
the meeting. She read a
thank you from Camp
Menesetung for the gener-
ous donation from the
church service which was
$750. A thank -you was
also read from George
Beatty thanking Turner
and all the committees for
the wonderful weekend.
Deb Rathwell thanked
Sandra Turner on behalf
of the committees for all
her hours of dedicated
work to get the big week-
end pulled together as
well as all other helpers.
Jean Dunn thanked every-
one who helped and gave
photos for the school
reunion and said it was
very successful.
George Louch reported
that Bill Taylor and him-
self were quite impressed
with the parade entries
and thanked Charlie
Kalbfleisch for all the tips
on how to keep it running
smoothly. They also want
to thank Don Rathwell
and his boys for helping.
Dave Roy reported on
the old-fashioned break-
fast that served 340 peo-
ple and could of served
more. The breakfast was
set up for 250 people and
the proceeds go to the
Brucefield Fire
VARNA
Department.
Pete Walden reported on
the BX 93 dance which
proved very successful
and Colleen Faulds would
like to thank their helpers.
David Turner was
pleased with the turnout
of antique tractors as well
as Ron Coleman with the
antique cars.
Van Bergen as very
pleased with the quilt dis-
play and added that Jim
Kirton, Ruth
Johnston
and Ralph
Stephenson were a great
help.
Bonnie Roy reported on
the scavenger hunt, old-
fashioned games and craft
stations. Winners of the
prizes for the scavenger
hunt were as follows: Ages
1-6 1st prize Abby
Rolands - bike donated
from Zellers; 2nd prize
Mitch Wolliston -a bag of
goodies; third prize Remi
Bliss - a basket of goodies.
Ages 7 - 12 1st Cody
Weber, $25 gift certifi-
cate, 2nd Tori Roy $15 gift
certificate; 3rd Kelli
Boogemans $10 gift cer-
tificate. The gift certifi-
cates were purchased
from Walmart by the
Brucefield Fire
Department. Other prizes
were donated by the
Home Hardware, Dollar
Store, Zhers and
MacDonalds. Every child
received a gift to take
home and a had a great
day. Other prizes and
craft supplies were donat-
ed by Daves Collision
Varna. Thank you to the
sponsors for the children
and also to Bonnie Roy,
Mildred McAsh and their
helpers.
Floyd McAsh compiled
the history of all the Varna
homes and reported he
enjoyed doing it. Terri
Louch daughter of George
NEWS
and Sylvia Louch did all
the printing of the posters
and a big thanks goes out
to her also.
Doug McAsh reported
the traveling golf went
very well and wishes to
thank his helpers.
Everyone enjoyed the golf-
ing as well as the visiting
at each person's home.
There were six lucky
chairs and six winners of
t -shirts from the Hully
Gully. They were
Margaret Hayter, Bill
Taylor, Marg Miller, Joan
Whyte, Carol Penhale and
Terri Louch.
Carol Pakenham com-
mented on the garden
party which went very
well and the rain held out
till it was over. Thank you
to all who helped with this
and also to the talented
people taking part.
Don Rathwell thanked
all the sponsors that
helped make this weekend
such a success.
Deb Rathwell and
Marion Coleman were
thanked for their help in
getting Randy Collins and
his celebrities out to the
baseball game.
June Webster reported
that the fish fry was a sell
out and thanked her
helpers.
To end the evening Jim
Kirton presented Joyce
Hummil (treasurer of the
Athletic Association for
Varna) with a cheque for
$10,000 which is the pro-
ceeds from the weekend.
Hummil thanked everyone
and said it would be put to
good use.
Everyone enjoyed the
social part so well that as
we did last March 17
should be repeated again
with another potluck sup-
per, so mark your calen-
dars.
Congratulations to
Shauna Faulds on receiv-
ing her bronze cross in
swimming.
Church service resumed
again in Varna on Sunday.
Joyce Dowson welcomed
everyone and gave the
announcements followed
by the Call to Worship and
Opening Prayer. The chil-
dren's story was done by
Carol Simons talking
about the `potter and the
clay'. The children and
some of the congregation
were given some play -
dough and told to shape
something out of it. Joyce
Dowson's message was on
As The Wheel Turns. The
Minutes for Mission was
read by Gordon Hill and
Jim Kirton. This followed
with the Commissioning
and the Blessing.
Next week Sept. 12 is
the annual 9-11 Day of
Remembrance service
with guest fireman Dave
Roy with the Brucefield
fire truck.
Sat., Sept 11, don't for-
get the firemen's break-
fast in Brucefield from 7-
12 noon.
There will be an official
board meeting in Varna at
8 p.m. on Sept. 13.
Sept. 17-19 is Camp
Menesetung's women's
weekend. For information
call Registrar Jan
Logtenberg at 529-7559.
Londesboro UCW are
hosting a fashion show
`Thru the Years'. This will
be a musical journey from
the 1870's to the 1950's
followed by refreshments
on Oct. 1 from 7-9pm.
Tickets in advance are $9
