(photo/PatBolen) Crediton juniors play underdog role in playoffs STRATHROY - The Crediton junior girls fast - ball team was unable to win the 'A' trophy at its playoff tourney but the local underdogs were definitely winners by upsetting some top teams in the tourney. Crediton captains Carie Pertschy and Jessica Davies were successful all weekend winning the flip for the home team advantage in all games played. Crediton 4 vs Strathroy 2 Strathroy jumped on the bats early in the first inning scoring two runs but Crediton quickly replied with two of their own in the first inning by Amber Preszcator and Kerri Fulton. The team kept its oppo- nent scoreless for the rest of the game with only a maximum of 3 to 4 players per inning. Crediton scored the win- ning run in the fifth inning by Amber Preszcator from a triple blasted by Kerri Fulton and cemented the win in the sixth with another insurance run by Janelle Dykstra from a triple by Megan Preszcator. Jessica Davies and Kerri Fulton led their team at the plate going three for three for the game. Amber Preszcator, Kelli Fulton and Janelle Dykstra added two single hits apiece. Single hits came from the bats of Jessica Bray, Rachel Michielsen and Nikki Cyr. Rachel Michielsen was outstanding in the pitch- er's position notching three strikeouts. Crediton 10 vs Byron 9 Crediton scored 10 runs in the first three innings and kept its opponent from tying the game after they scored nine in the second to fourth innings. The bats were hot for the local players and great defen- sive plays helped to upset the first place Byron squad. Lead-off batter Megan Preszcator and clean-up Kerri Fulton led their team at the plate with a double and two singles. Amber Preszcator pounded out a triple in the third and added a single hit while Carrie Dixon added two single hits. Jessica Bray's pow- erful hit and speed cleared the bases in the first inning Kelli Fulton, Jessica Davies and Margaret Geurts added single hits. Carrie Dixon was the starting pitcher for Crediton with relief from Rachel Michielsen. Crediton 5 vs London South 12 Crediton played a very strong game against London South keeping the score 4-2 until the fourth inning when South scored three runs, one more in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Crediton replied to South's four runs in the first inning with two of their own off the single hits by Jessica Davies, Kelli Fulton, Kerri Fulton and Jessica Bray. Nikki Cyr scored in the fourth and Carrie Dixon and Janelle Dykstra added two more in the seventh. Jessica Davies led her team at the plate with a double and two singles with three single hits by Kerri Fulton. Nikki Cyr notched two single hits and single hits came from the bats of Kelli Fulton, Jessica Bray, Carrie Dixon and Janelle Dykstra. Carrie Dixon pitched for Crediton with relief from Jessica Bray. Crediton 0 vs Dorchester Sports Wearhouse 9 The bats were very quiet for the Crediton squad in its last game in the tourney but the defense kept its oppo- nents quiet until the sixth inning when the game broke open. Only three batters reached first for Crediton. Kerri Fulton pounded out a double and single hits came from Kelli Fulton and Carie Pertschy. Rachel Michielsen went the distance for Crediton notching three strike- outs. Coach's note: The whole team should be commended for its strong ability playing right along and even above some of the strong tri -county teams this sea- son. It was a new experi- ence for the local squad with every night having to battle hard for a win but the team gelled so well together athletically and personally. Baseball scholarship for pitcher Hogg By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — An Exeter baseball player will be heading south this fall to don the uni- form of an American col- lege after receiving a scholarship to Graceland University in Iowa. Nineteen year old Terry Hogg has been play- ing ball since he was two. Although he started out playing every posi- tion, after switching to hardball he got a chance to try pitching. With his first pitch down the middle, he was told, "you're a pitcher." He was a member of both the Exeter Juniors and Express this sum- mer. Hogg had a tryout with the London Monarchs of the Canadian Baseball League last year and just missed making the team, being number 11 of 10 pitchers who were chosen from 200 who were trying out. Thinking about uni- versity in 2002, he met the agent of Exeter golfer Karly Pinder, who asked him "what about you?" The agent, who worked for College Prospects of America, sent Hogg's profile out on the web, resulting in a lot of offers according to Hogg. Of the schools that contacted him, Hogg said Graceland was the right fit. "It feels like a town," said Hogg of the school, which is located in Lamoni, Iowa with Des Moines the nearest large city. On a four year course, Hogg is taking chemistry but says he might also go into computer work as a technician. During his orientation at the school earlier in the summer, Hogg said he was made to feel at home almost immedi- ately, with players from the team welcoming him to the school. "Everybody was so friendly there, asking if I needed anything. I made friends instantly." After the orientation, Hogg said he wasn't given any special train- ing regimes by his new team and they just said for him to focus on his own baseball for the summer. He reported to the school Aug. 26 and will be practicing with them this fall, with a six week tryout in the spring. Hogg says he does have hopes of getting to the majors someday. "If I was to get a chance, I'd take it." Terry Hogg After completing a very successful year going undefeated in the season and being league champs, the Crediton girls came up just one run short of winning the "A" final held in Kirkton last week. The girls played a great tournament but ran out of time and energy to catch their very competitive rivals from Lieury losing with a score of 13 to 12 after their third ball game that day. A terrific season for the girls and better luck next year. `Lieury, we will be back."
