The Ontario A team met up with Ontario's B team for the final game winning by a score of 16-12. The B team took the silver medal. The week of three- hour 18 end games started Monday in a round robin format with the other provinces. The Exeter team won its first five matches receiving two points for each win defeating Manitoba 23-16, Alberta 18-10, B.0 16-10, Sask 17-11 and Quebec 15- 10. On Thursday the wheels fell off with the whole team having a bad day losing to Ontario B 25-7. Friday they needed a win or a tie over Nova Scotia to guarantee a spot in the gold medal game Saturday morning. After a close game to the final bowl, Nova Scotia pulled off an upset with its second win of the week with a 15-14 score. This put Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario B tied for first place with 10 points for the week. The record against each other determined the final positioning with Ontario A and B each winning two of three games. Manitoba played Saskatchewan for the bronze medal and came out the winner. Results in other events for the week were: Men Singles -Ontario B, silver Mens Pairs -Ontario A, gold Ontario B silver Fours -Ontario B, gold Women -Ontario A, gold Ont ario B, silver JoAnne Bugler (Skip), Gloria McFalls (Vice), Dianne Terry (Second) and Carol Carter (Lead) are the Exeter Ladies Fours team which cap- tured the Canadian National Lawn Bowling gold medal at the National Championships in Vancouver Aug. 16-2 I . (photo/PatBolen) Exeter Express ready for O.B.A.'s EXETER — The Exeter Express ended their regular season playoffs Friday with a 10-3 loss against the London Bulls. The Express had defeated St. Thomas and Listowel during the four game mini playoffs but also lost key games to the Bulls and the London Stingrays. Fridays game was to decide which four teams would be involved in the league wrap-up in St. Thomas Saturday. Team spokesman Joe Fulop said this put manager Doug Fairbairn in a tough spot as he wanted to save his pitching staff for the 0.B.A playoffs next weekend at Listowel. Fairbairn also wanted to do well against the Bulls. His decision was to use some of his younger pitchers to have them experience the pressures of playoff base- ball. He was also able to have a mostly well -rested staff for the playoffs starting Friday in Mitchell. In a game limited to five innings due to darkness the Express scored three runs on hits by Aaron Leppington, Aaron Patterson, Lonnie Hawke and two hits by Dan Masse and Vic Oliveira. But it was not enough as the Bulls scored 10 runs on 15 hits to advance to the league finals against St. Thomas who defeated Strathroy in the semi-final game in St. Thomas. The Bulls scored five runs off Nick Regier in his two innings of work while Leppington pitched two shutout innings. Matt Hummel allowed two earned runs during his inning and Bobby Grant allowed one run in his one inning appearance. Fulop said the Express are in tough in the 0.B.A tour- nament. They drew into the tough half of the nine team pool with their starting game against South Woodslee. If the Express win that game an apparently stacked team from Clarksburg would await them Saturday morning. The Exeter Saddle Club's youth team went to the Ontario Saddle Club Youth Team tournament at Paris, Ont July 30 -Aug I. They placed fourth out of 28 teams from all areas of Ontario. The team is front L -R: Joslyn Van Aaken and Hunter Taylor. Middle: Montana Riley, Chantelle Masse, Shawna Ducharme, Keenan Taylor and Jake Moore. Back: Sarah Miller, Caitlin Dorssers and Jessie Moore. The team is coached by Lindsey Dale and Chuck Moore. Missing: Alyssa Coddington and Noah Rohfritsch. (photo/submitted) Other teams in the tournament include Listowel, Glanbrook, Forest, Essex, Wallaceburg and Thorold. Fulop said the team has shown excellent pitching at times with Derek Masse being the ace and solid starters such as Dan Masse, Hawke and Marty Merner. Other starters could include Aaron Leppington, Jeff Green or Derek Brown. He added solid relief pitching could come from the above players plus veteran lefthander Paul Elston and the versatile Regier. The defence is normally solid with several good infield averages from Dan Masse, Hawke, Scott McCutcheon, Ryan Fairful, Patterson, Merner, Regier and Scott Smith. Fulop said Grant is the best catcher the Express have ever had and this is an achievement to be selected over former players Kevin Hern and Darcy Martin. The outfield, according to Fulop, has depth with Adam Leppington and Oliveira supplying the speed and Cory Burtch, Aaron Leppington, Hummell, Dan Masse and Jason Smith filling in adequately as well. The Express have several players hitting over .300 and the offence is capable of winning a championship. Fulop noted Fairbairn has done an excellent job of recruiting and runs the team well on the field with an aggressive style of base running. He added if the components hold up and lady luck helps out, the team could go a long way on the week- end.
