'Test Drive,' a new play by Dave Carley, opened at the Blyth Festival Aug. 12. The play features Blyth's Artistic Director Eric Coates as Earl Hughes — a veteran car salesman who is convinced his product, American Motors (AMC) Nash automobiles, rivals all other brands. Doing double -duty are Jane Spidell and Darren Keay, who make up the rest of the cast and take on multiple roles. Spidell is impressive as she switches back and forth between characters with a simple unzip of a shirt or the addition of glasses. While Keay isn't required to change char- acters quite as quickly, he also takes on numerous characters and performs them all with an evident wit and humour. 'Test Drive' is the explo- ration of one man's comic and heart-warming jour- ney through the potholes of life. After his father-in-law dies he inherits a car dealership, which he runs with the help of his wife Dorothy. Both are obsessed with cars and apparently got together in high school because Dorothy drove the best car. Throughout the play we meet their daughter and son, Speedy and Franklin and a host of other char- acters who weave their way into the life of the central character. Carley has a fascination with cars and the people who buy and sell them. "The changes in the industry over the years have paralleled the changes in North American society. I origi- nally wrote it as a series for CBC Radio and I expanded it into a two -act stage play," he says in a press release. Carley says the central character's life is anything but ordinary — he lives an extraordinary life, just like all of us. The world premiere of 'Test Drive' in Blyth is directed by Miles Potter. Set design by Steve Lucas is minimal, but gets the point across. Through a simple change in light- ing the set goes from a Drunk driving arrests HURON — Huron OPP were again kept busy this past weekend dealing with drinking and driving offences along with alcohol consumption problems and distur- bances. On Aug. 21 at 11:45 p.m. a white Buick was stopped on Airport Line in Bluewater for a traffic violation. The driver was found with alcohol on his breath and was given the alcotest test resulting in a 12 -hour license suspension. The vehicle was towed and the 29-year-ol male from Bluewater was given a ride home. Then on Aug. 22 in the early morning hours an officer was on foot patrol in the village of Bayfield when a youth was spotted leaving a liquor establishment. The person was approached and found to be underage and under the influence of alcohol. The youth, an 18 -year old male, was turned over to parents and charged with being intoxicated in a public place. Within minutes another officer spotted what appeared to be an underage person leaving a liquor establishment in Bayfield. The person was stopped and found to be under the age to be in a bar. The young female was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place. While officers were dealing with this issue another male was yelling profanity at the officers. The male in ques- tion was arrested for causing a disturbance and also for being intoxicated in a public place. He will attend court in Goderich on Oct. 4. Officers also dealt with a number of other drinking offences when people were caught walking along road- ways consuming alcohol.
