The Times Advocate, 2004-09-01, Page 11Wednesday, September 1, 2004 Exeter Times—Advocate 11 A knight to remember at Huron Country Playhouse Reid Spencer as the Aldonza, and David Ludwig as Don Quixote in the production of `Man of La Mancha: (photo/submitted) Governor/Innkeeper, Eddie Glen as Sancho, Rebecca Poff as Huron Country Playhouse GRAND BEND — The summer theatre season at the Huron Country Playhouse ends on a high note with the epic Broadway musical, 'Man of La Mancha.' This cherished tale delights audiences with its enchanting melodies and grand theatrical transfor- mations. At the end of the 16th century, in a bleak dun- geon, imprisoned play- wright Miguel de Cervantes is awaiting trial by the dreaded Spanish Inquisition, but first he must face a court of fellow prisoners anxious to relieve him of his few pos- sessions — including a precious unfinished manu- script. In order to save himself, Cervantes stages the saga of Don Quixote, casting himself as the deluded knight errant, and embarks on a magical adventure to defend the noble principles of honour and truth. The production is direct- ed and choreographed by Ted Forlow, who has 15 Broadway shows to his credit. The outstanding 21 - member cast is led by David Ludwig in the multi- ple roles of Cervantes, Don Quixote and Alonso Quijana. Ludwig strikes a careful balance between dignity and humour, while his soaring voice brings authority and heroism to the fragile protagonist. His faithful companion, Three break-ins HURON — South Huron, Bluewater and Central Huron recently experienced break-ins. Two break-ins were found Aug. 20, while a third happened Aug. 23. The first break-in was reported early on the morning of Aug. 20 in Central Huron when a shed/workshop was found to have been entered sometime overnight. The owner had forgotten to lock the building allowing someone to enter and walk away with $7,800 worth of property during the night. The resi- dence, located on Huron Road in Central Huron, had a 2003 Polaris Trail Boss four wheel ATV, Stihl chainsaw and a Campbell-Hausfield 20 gallon air com- pressor stolen. The second report was received from a King Street residence in Hensall. Again, the owner had left the garage unlocked allowing someone to enter. Sometime in the last week while the owner was away a person entered the garage and stole a 2003 22" Yard Works push lawnmower, a 1999 Poulin 20" bar chainsaw, a 2003 Featherlight weed eater and 2003 Featherlight leaf blower. The theft is valued at over $2,000. The third break-in occurred Monday at 2:15 a.m. at BB's Fuel Gas Station on Road #164 in Woodham. The window of the gas station was forced open setting off an alarm. The culprit was scared away but not before a citizen spotted a black pickup truck fleeing the scene. Nothing was stolen in this attempt. Huron OPP are investigating all three reports. If you can help solve these crimes call the Huron OPP or contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS). Sancho Panza, is played effectively by Eddie Glen, blending comedy with sen- timentality as his charac- ter follows his hero through their many adventures. Rebecca Poff, plays Aldonza, the object of Ludwig's affections. She gives a passionate perfor- mance, overwhelming the audience as she is trans- formed from the serving girl to Lady Dulcinea. Curtis Sullivan is a men- acing dark presence in the dual role of Cervantes' prison adversary the Duke and Quixote's nemesis Dr. Carrasco. As Antonia, Lisa Kisch displays a beautiful voice and Phil Cook is similarly in the role of the Padre. The exceptional 10 -piece orchestra is led by John Karr and provides a full, rich sound. From the stirring title tune to the bitter and bit- ing `Aldonza,' the music has the power to excite and the lyrics have an edge that cuts to the heart. There is also a comic touch in `Golden Helmet of Mambrino,' witty satire in `I'm Only Thinking of Him,' beguiling romance in `Dulcinea' and the pow- erful anthem 'The Impossible Dream.' With its timeless mes- sage of courage and ideal- ism in the face of despair, 'Man of La Mancha' is one of the greatest treasures in musical theatre. It's an inspiring tale of epic pro- portions that encourages all of us to keep reaching for the stars. 'Man of La Mancha' runs at the Huron Country Playhouse until Sept. 4.
