IIRY NEWS Principal's message EXETER — Students and parents are reminded that report cards will be available for pick up in the main office from June 28 to July 2 during regular office hours. After that, reports will be mailed home, provided that the student does not have any textbooks, library books, fines or fees owing. If this is the case, a letter will be sent indicating what the student owes. This week's column is courtesy of Judy Mallette. one of our English teachers. She wishes to share with you some wisdom gleaned from the exams of her Grade 10 students: It was while marking my Grade 10 English exams that I was reminded, one more time, that the role of student/teacher is quite interchangeable. The role for me, after all of these years, is never clearly defined... June is the time of year when students and teachers scramble to complete projects, prepare for exams and look forward to a break, some time off from the rigours of school and the new, curriculum. At this point in the year, a teacher feels he/she knows her students pretty well and that what has been recorded in a marks book is probably a good reflection of that face in the class- room. Then comes the final exam, and in many cases I am introduced to someone new, someone I hadn't met before, a teacher disguised as a 16 year old. After reading Shakespeare's `Romeo and Juliet," we talked at length about parent/child relationships, both the good and the bad sides of this challenging partnership. After reading several other excerpts on the topic, students were asked to write a letter of advice to parents of teens. I can't begin to share with you all they had to say, but here is a list, taken directly from the letters they wrote. Be reminded this is in an exam situation. They have no Internet or "Chicken Soup" books to consult. JEFF REABURN PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE These bits of wisdom come straight from their heads and, I believe, mostly from their hearts. This is what they have written to us and, as they say ... this is the wisdom straight from the mouths of babes. Enjoy. "Dear Parents, Trust us. You have taught us well. We know the dif- ference between right and wrong. We live in the here and now because the future fright- ens us. Never judge us; we're hard enough on ourselves and each other. Trust is a fragile thing. Talk to your teen daily. Trust us. If you trust us we will in turn trust you. Remind us often to never get in a car with a drunk dri- ver. Always get good groceries and some unhealthy junk Don't take every whispered curse or snappy look as an insult. Encourage teenagers. Love teenagers. Forgive teenagers. Treat your teen the same way you treat your best friend. Just remember, no one is perfect, not even you, and you have had a whole life to practice. Laugh. Respect our privacy; no one is as private as a teenager. Don't judge us by our music. Chances are we will grow up to be good adults. Help us out when we need a few extra dollars. You will be happy when we invite you to come and live with us when you are old and lonely. Do not use your children to achieve a dream you had when you were young. Remember how much you mean to us and how much we need you in our lives. Remember that some problems seem so simple to solve for an adult but can cause a world of trouble for a teen. To have a good teen is as simple as being a good par- ent. And finally, love us no matter what. Love, ENG2D" We have good kids. Our future world is in good hands. Enjoy your summer.
