Strong showing for crokinole players at world championship

VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA - The Stan Lee Club met in the Complex
beginning with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. with 20
members present. After supper they were entertained
by a father and son duo. Ralph and Blaine Stephenson
and Leona McBride played the piano as well.
Charles Reid conducted the business and
mixed in his usual bits of humour. Plans
were discussed for their float in the
Sesquicentennial parade in Varna on the civic holiday
weekend. Reid appealed for someone to take on the
treasurer's duties. On Sept. 8 they will begin the fall sea-
son with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m.
A few games of euchre were enjoyed.
Church service was in Varna on Sunday with Pastor
Elly with the welcome and announcements followed by
the lighting of the Christ Candle by Danny Keys. The
children's story was `How Do We Tell Others'. The choir
favoured everyone with their gift of music and sang
Why Do I Sing About Jesus. Pastor Elly's message: God
In Three Persons, Blessed Trinity.
Sun., June 13 confirmation and communion will be
celebrated.
Sun., June 13 is Bairds Decoration Day.
Thurs., June 10 Huron -Perth Division World Outreach
has arranged a `Face -to -Face' meeting with a young
gentleman, Mr. Bita from Tanzania. He will be their
guest on June 10 and the day's agenda will focus on his
interest in agriculture. A potluck supper will follow at 6
p.m. at the Brucefield Church. A Five Alive Worship will
follow at 7:30 p.m. with a social time to follow.

Graduation Exh+ibition
Marten Gerard was one of the artists whose work
was displayed at the South Huron District High
School Graduation Exhibit June 3-5. Gerard chose to
do custom bike work using chrome manipulation
techniques. He displayed four bikes and he estimated
it took him between 40 and 80 hours to complete
each bike. An exhibition was also held for Grades 9-
11 students, running from June 7-9. (photo/Mary

Elly's 50th birthday celebration is in the form of a ben-
efit concert on June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Varna Complex
with Edward Klaasen, a Paraguayan harpist. Please no
gifts or cards. All proceeds for Beads of
IIope. Everyone welcome!
Varna UCW met Thursday June 3 with
Deb Rathwell opening with a poem `Tribute'. She then
thanked the committee, Mona Stephenson, Ruby Hill
and Marilyn Kalbfleisch, for the program to follow.
Thank-yous were read from Ralph and Mona
Stephenson, Brenda, Jeff and Samatha Chuter and from
Janine Verbeek on behalf of South Huron Community
Living.
Margaret Hayter attended Westminster Weekend.
The Summer Event will be held on July 17 at the
Siloam United Church .
Ruby Hill then read a poem `Everything is Green and
Growing' followed by prayer. Marilyn Kalbfleisch read
the Scripture and read a poem 'The Lord God Planted a
Garden'. Ruby Hill then read Summertime.
Mona Stephenson then introduced guest speaker
Denise Shamick from Pearl's Health Care in Bayfield.

Next meeting is a dinner -theatre meeting on August
26 at Grand Bend Playhouse II, A Closer Walk With
Patsy Cline. Goshen UCW will be catering the dinner
first. Anyone wanting tickets should call Shirley Hill or
Eleanor McAsh.
A few members from the Varna Crokinole Club trav-
eled to Tavistock for the World Championship Crokinole
Tournament. Congrats to Joe Fulop on first in the sin-
gles. Congrats also to brothers Raymond and Jason
Beierling on winning second in the doubles.
