The game turned into a shootout in the second half with six of the seven goals scored in the last 45 minutes. The first half was played fairly evenly with both sides controlling the ball but with few good scoring chances. Exeter managed to tally the only goal of the half when Andrew Prout sent a ball through for DeBruyn who picked it up and buried it past the keeper. Marconi increased its attack in the second half and it paid off with a couple of quick goals. The Fury players left their goalie alone on the first goal when Nathan Holmes made an excel- lent save, tipping the ball off the crossbar but no one picked up the rebound. Marconi's second goal was an outstanding shot just under the bar Holmes had no chance on. Now trailing by a goal, the Fury kept battling. DeBruyn scored his second goal from in close when the Marconi keeper bobbled a ball that was crossed into the box. Shortly after that DeBruyn completed his hat trick on a long pass from Steve McLeod that flew over the defenders' heads. DeBruyn ran hard to the ball and walked in alone on the keeper, making no mistake by picking the corner. This swing in momen- tum seemed like it would be enough to carry the Fury to victory but a bad bounce allowed the visi- tors to tie the game once again. Keeper Holmes came out of his net to grab a loose ball in the box but a tricky bounce saw the Matt Strano chases down a loose ball for the Curinga. The Fury improved to 2-1 on (photo/ScottNixon) ball bounce off his shoul- ders and directly to a Marconi player who had the whole net to shoot at. The game proceeded into its late stages with both teams trying to get the one goal that would give them the victory. DeBruyn had a great chance but the Marconi defender was tugging on his jersey from behind and then hauled him down in the box. No call was made on the play. The game appeared headed for a draw but McLeod had other ideas. Taking a free kick from the left side of the field and from a good dis- tance from the net, McLeod lofted a shot towards the goal. The ball continued to sail right under the bar and over the keeper's outstretched arms. The Fury's surprising goal was the one that finally finished off their opponents. Exeter Fury Sunday night against the season with a 5-3 win. "The second half was quite a battle with all the momentum changes," said Fury spokesman Jason McFalls. "I thought we showed a lot of character by not giving up when we fell behind," added McFalls. The Fury played host to Curinga on Sunday in their third game of the season and came out on top of a 5-3 score. Exeter began quickly as they made a charge down the field following the initial whistle. The Fury were award- ed a free kick and the duo of McLeod to DeBruyn proved deadly as DeBruyn potted his first of the game in the first moment of play. A short time later, the Fury capitalized on a loose ball and DeBruyn scored to make it 2-0. Curinga was awarded a penalty shot before the half was through, but goalkeeper Holmes made a spectacular save which inspired his team- mates. Craig Hern scored fol- lowing a scramble to make it 3-0 at the half. In the second half, Curinga began strong and netted two to shave the lead to 3-2. Exeter regrouped and Andrew Prout made it a two -goal lead once again when he finished off a pass from DeBruyn. Curinga were awarded their second penalty shot of the game and this time made no mistake, narrowing the score to 4-3. The Fury put the game out of reach when they were awarded a free kick from in close. Prout made no mistake as he fired it over the wall into the top of the net. The win puts Exeter's record at 2-1 for the year. They next see action Sunday at home at 7 p.m. against the German Canadians. ZURICH — May 26 the Zurich Rangers lost their first game of the season to the Wroxeter Rippers. The final score was 6-4. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Craig Skinner singled home Justin LaPorte. Wroxeter responded with two rims in the bottom of the first inning, but Zurich scored in both the sec- ond and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. With two outs in the third inning however, Wroxeter scored four rims on an inside the park grand slam. Zurich rallied late, but Wroxeter held on for a 6-4 victo- ry. LaPorte led the Rangers offence with four hits and a run scored. The Zurich Rangers now have two wins and a loss to start the season. On the weekend the Rangers were in a tournament in Dennis Gower Goderich. The Rangers were defeated by the Goderich Orioles in their first game of the tournament. To advance to the B semi-final Zurich needed a win or a tie in their second game against the Wroxeter Rippers. Wroxeter stormed out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings of play. However, Zurich's bats would come alive scoring 10 runs in the next three innings to take a com- manding 10-5 lead. Wroxeter would later rally to score five runs, and the game ended in a 10-10 tie. The Rangers pounded out 15 hits in total with two hits a piece from Ricky Geoffrey, Kevin Geoffrey, Mike DeGroot, Joe Morley, Neil Beauchamp, and Jeff Finkbeiner. The tie allowed Zurich to advance to the B semi- final against Belmore on Sunday. In a well pitched game, Belmore beat the Rangers 1-0 to eliminate Zurich from the tournament. Dennis Gower pitched a complete game for Zurich, striking out eight batters. The Rangers play next in Walton June 1, and have a double-header against Exeter Sunday. Huron -Perth rugby The junior and senior boys rugby teams partici- pated in Huron -Perth May 25. The junior boys played an uninspired game and lost to the fourth seeded team from St. Anne's, 12- 0. In the bronze game, they stepped up their play and defeated Madill 15-0 on tries by Ryan Masse, Tim Bilcke and Brett Crerar. All in all, the junior boys had a good season and are to be commended for their commitment and fine play. The senior boys played very well but lost to the number one seed, Madill, 17-0. In the bronze game, they again played very well, but lost a close 12-10 decision to St. Anne's. Justin Fields and Greg Morley scored the tries. The seniors also had a very good overall season as they showed some real commitment and raised the level of play at the senior level. Coaches Terry O'Rourke, Steve Pockett and Peter Darbishire thank all the rugby teams for their efforts this year.
