Regional
wrap up
Medical clinic
GODERICH — Bruce
Sully is calling on
Goderich and area resi-
dents to step up to the
plate and support plans
for a permanent medical
clinic.
The Goderich Signal -
Star reported Sully, hon-
ourary chair of the
Goderich medical clinic,
was joined by campaign
chair Ken Dunn May 10
in issuing the public
appeal for support.
Plans for the new clin-
ic, to be constructed
adjacent to Alexandra
Marine and General
Hospital, are nearing
completion. Dunn said
over the next few
months residents could
expect to be contacted
during a public fundrais-
ing campaign in the
hopes of raising $1 mil-
lion.
New skate
park location
SEAFORTH — The
parking lot behind
town hall where the old
water tower used to be
located is the new
home of a skateboard
park for Seaforth.
The Huron Expositor
reported Huron East
council agreed to the
location at its May 4
meeting after receiving
two letters of com-
plaint, one including 10
signatures, about coun-
cil's preferred location
at the back parking lot
of Bethel Bible Church.
Meat packers
in contempt
CLINTON
Something historic hap-
pened in Parliament last
week.
The Clinton News -
Record reported some of
Canada's for the first
time in at least 75 years,
all parties worked
together to find three
large Canadian beef
packers in contempt of
Parliament.
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle said he is
pleased with the fact
that Parliament was
able to find the beef
packers in contempt
with the help of all par-
ties.
Letter campaign
to keep Dr. Lam
Continued from front page
GBACHC executive
director Dan Steinwald
told the Times -Advocate
Monday the centre has
made several funding
applications to the
province to make such an
arrangement, but the gov-
ernment was "non-
responsive."
As a result, Lam's
patients have started a let-
ter -writing campaign to
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell and Lambton-
Kent-Middlesex MPP
Maria Van Bommel urging
them for additional fund-
ing.
"It seems the only way to
get the attention of politi-
cians is to have members
of the community write
and tell them how they
feel," Steinwald said.
Copies of the letter are
available in Lam's office
and at the Hoffman
Funeral Home. Concerned
patients are asked to sign
a copy so it can be for-
warded to the MPPs.
Steinwald said if the
GBACHC gets funding
approval from the
Ministry, it will go ahead
with staffing for the
Dashwood office and have
another doctor work there
while Lam is on her leave
of absence.
He said Mitchell and Van
Bommel have been
favourable but non-com-
EBA news

Council passed a bylaw
naming members of the
board of management for
the Exeter Business
Association for a three-
year term which coin-
cides with the current
council term.
Named to the EBA
board of management
are: chairperson Betty
Thomson, secretary
Victoria Pfaff, treasurer
Bob Gehan, promotion
chairperson Tom Hartai,
council representative
Pete Armstrong and
directors Jane Kemsley,
Wilma Truemner, Karin
Zehetner, Dave
Holtzmann and Adrian
Bakelaar. The bylaw also
approved the EBA's 2004
budget of $44,000 and set
tax charges between $50
and $500 for properties
within the EBA area.
mittal about the proposal.
The GBACHC was await-
ing yesterday's provincial
budget (announced after
the T -A went to press) to
see what kind of funding
was available for medical
clinics and satellite offices.
The Greater Grand Bend
Community Association
(GGBCA) has also contact-
ed Mitchell and Van
Bommel in support of
keeping Lam.
The GGBCA's letter
reads, in part, "If this pro-
posed plan is not accepted
by the Ministry, Dr. Lam's
4,000 plus patients would
be left without a doctor,
thus severely straining the
already medically under -
serviced greater Grand
Bend community.
"As the population of the
.. community grows by
migration, mostly senior
citizens who bring age-
related health issues with
them, this would present
catastrophic impediments
to the ability of the
GBACHC to provide ade-
quate medical services to
all of the residents of, and
tourists to, the Grand
Bend area. "Steinwald
said there is a similar situ-
ation looming in Zurich
concerning a succession
plan for Dr. Charles
Wallace's practice.
"Dr. Wallace is in his
mid-70s," Steinwald said.
"We hope that he prac-
tices until the next millen-
nium, but it's not some-
thing you would bet on."
