Express split playoff games
EXETER — In league playoff action last
week, the Exeter Express split a pair of
games.
Wednesday night the Express went to
Labatt Park and came up on the losing
end of an 11-7 score against the London
Bulls.
Derek Brown started the game and
gave up three singles, four walks and
four earned rims while striking out three
in three innings of work.
Jeff Green came on in relief and in two
innings of work gave up two earned runs
on three singles and one walk while strik-
ing out two.
Dan Masse came in next and gave up
five earned runs in the next two and two
thirds innings.
He gave up two singles, two doubles,
walked three and struck out two.
Paul Elston came in next to get the final
out and gave up a double in one third of
an inning of work.
Offensively, the Express had three play-
ers with multi -hit games.
Aaron Leppington had a double and a
triple, Bob Grant had a single and a triple
and Aaron Patterson had two singles.
Also coming through with hits were
Cory Burtch with a double and singles by
Vic Oliveira, Scott Smith, Marty Merner
and Matt Hummell.
It was a frustrating game for the
Express, after being down 6-1 they fought
back to tie it 6-6 in the top of the eighth
only to give up five runs in the bottom of
the eighth.
With only one at bat left, it was too
much to overcome.
Friday night at home, the Express beat
Listowel 13-5 in a game shortened to six
innings because of a lack of daylight.
Merner was the starting pitcher and
gave up five earned runs in four innings
on one single, two doubles, two walks
and two strikeouts.
Derek Masse came on in relief and did-
n't allow any runs in two innings of work.
Masse gave up one single, walked two
and struck out two.
"Offensively we hammered the ball all
night, everyone right from the top to the
bottom of our lineup was hitting," said
Express coach Doug Fairbairn.
Bob Grant had a three -hit performance
with two singles and a double while
Adam Leppington pounded out a double
and a homerun.
Oliveira had a single and a double and
Merner had two singles.
Also chipping in with hits were Aaron
Patterson with a triple, Dan Masse and
Smith with a double and Burtch and
Derek Masse with singles.
"After the four game playoff round
robin, we ended up two and two. We
won't know until all of the teams have
completed their schedule to see if we
qualify for the league wrapup tourna-
ment Saturday in St. Thomas. We may
have to play a tie breaker game some
night this week," added Fairbairn.
