The Hawks will have a good nucleus returning from last season's cham- pionship team according to general manager John Rasenberg, who said the team will not be in a rebuilding phase like it was going into last sea- son. The team will again have stability behind the bench with Dave Revington returning for as head coach. Tryouts will be held Friday night from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and again Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The next set of tryouts will not be held until Sept. 8 in Zurich. Rasenberg said there is a fair number of spots open on the team although there are more players returning than last year. The Hawks have lost Justin Knee to the Junior B London Nationals as well as Travis Elder. The Hawks will also be strong in net with Rasenberg saying the "crop of goaltenders we have is just phenomenal and there will be some hard decisions. We'll be very solid and we think most of our defensive core will be back intact." "We'll be looking for some offensive punch. When you start looking at missing a Jeff Finkbeiner and Shawn Sherwood, some other guys will have to step up and fill some BE SURE TO \` READ THE SPORTS PAGES NEXTWEEK FOR SUMMER SPORTS WRAPUP TOURNEY RESULTS 17 August 2004 Alice Thiel Catherine DeCorte Donna Smale Hazel McEwen Merle McLellan Cor DeCorte Theo Vandenboom Ray Warner 569 555 517 508 486 483 439 393 big shoes and we'll have to recruit a bit. Rasenberg added Matt Vlemmix will be back as an overager as is Chad Deman, "and some younger guys got another year underneath their belt." Brandon Wedlock, who was injured in last year's playoffs, has indicated to the Hawks his intention of rejoining the team this season. The Hawks have lost Henny Pfaff who is out west and Mark Smith, who Rasenberg said would probably not be back, "so we're probably looking for about 10 play- ers." Rasenberg said Revington returning behind the bench is another strong point for the Hawks, "with the respect he has not only from the players, but the officials and the league." \I 0 — Exeter/Hensall (EH) girls softball Aug. 21—Huron/Perth League Championships Game 1: Hibbert 15 vs EH 21. A young bird is a pigeon born any time after Jan. 1, 2004. The first races were held from Oshawa and from the intersection of Highways 10 and 401. Fourteen members entered a total of 271 pigeons in the short race and 190 birds competed in the Oshawa race. Rick Veens from Arkona took the first three posi- tions in the short race. Junior member Andrew Veens captured the number four, five and six spots. Jim Whitworth from Forest won position seven, while various other members of the Veens clan picked up positions eight -12. Marion Roden's pigeon was the first to score for the Lucan flock. Paul Finch's Fly Rite loft from downtown Walton captured positions one, two and three from Oshawa. Hard on the tails of Paul's birds were birds belonging to Rick and Andrew Veens. With the exception of position ten, which was won by Brendan Cunningham's bird, the Veens pigeons won positions four -16. The Lucan Hardy birds seem not to have hit stride yet. A week later races were held from Coburg and Oshawa. Congratulations to Lucan's Brendan Cunningham, one of whose pigeons won this rather tough race. Rick and Jus Veens got second and third, while Whitworth's Cedar loft captured positions four and five. And those Veens birds kept pouring in. Norm Hardy managed to get positions 18 and 20. Birds belonging to Tom Hardy and Paul Finch were well off the pace. In fact, they flew like pacers. The race from Oshawa was won by John Veens. Cedar loft got positions three and four. From then on it was a steady Veens procession with occasional intrusions by Nauvoo lofts, Jim Southern from Kerwood, and Norm Hardy. •' r. rr Cr*\ I rIJ Jr;I I r riri'Jf aLr,D)-y.L7 2004 Ford Ranger Edge SC 4x2 Lease $.169 per month/ 36 months Or Cash Purchase $19,995" Atter $1000 Bonus Cash deducted' • 3.0L V6 Engine • 4 -Wheel ABS • 15'I Aluminum Wheels • Colour -Keyed Front Bumper, Rear Step and Wheel Lip Mouldings • P235/75R15 AII-Terrain 99 THERE'S LOTS TO LIKE HOT SAVINGS ON COOL VEHICLES JUST IN TIME FOR CAREFREE SUMMER CRUISING.
