(photo/submitted) LONDON — The U-19 South Western Ontario Regional Girls Rugby Team competed in the Ontario Summer games this past weekend winning silver. The opening game of the tournament matched the girls versus Eastern Ontario. Each team started out with strong defence until Caitlin Martin (Belmore) busted a huge run for the games first try giving South West a 5-0 lead. Soon after, Katie Weber (Walkerton) dodged the opponents from Ottawa and added another try. Shaw Bellefeuille fin- ished off the scoring for South West as she scam- pered for a nice try down the sideline. The final score of 15-0 for the South West girls put them a leg up in the round robin against the field. Game two pitted the girls against the Niagara Rugby Union. Key injuries in the first match that ended the tournament for Laura Reinhart demanded adjustments that the girls successfully made. Jill McCallum (London) delivered the hit of the tournament, which neu- tralized play from Niagara and gave the South West girls an edge. Caitlin Martin and Katie Weber scored early tries, but Niagara countered with a penalty kick nar- rowing the lead to 10-3 for South West. Brianne Crawford (Stratford) scored the important insurance try and Caitlin Martin finished off a tremendous day as she flew around the out- side and scored her sec- ond try of the game. At the end of regulation the South West girls were victorious 20-3 and more importantly 2-0 in group play. The girls awoke for day two of the competition brimming with confidence. The next opponent was the Toronto Rugby Union and this game would determine who would fin- ish first in the round robin. Both teams played tight defensive matches, with pounding rucks and pun- ishing mauls. Brianne Crawford man- aged a strong cut back and pierced the Toronto defence to give the girls the lead. Shannon Johnston (Lucknow) converted the kick to extend the South West lead to 7-0. Toronto clawed back into the match and tied the score, but the referee's whistle for the end of reg- ulation gave South West a tie and the first place they wanted. As they stood on top after the first three games, the South West girls were also starting to lose many key players. Morgan Craig (Kincardine) and Vicki Koebel (Walkerton) both suffered tournament end- ing injuries. But the South West girls were determined and responded as they faced a rematch with the Niagara Rugby Union. The game was another tough battle in the trench- es, but Caitlin Martin used her speed to penetrate the Niagara defensive line and score the game's opening try- Both 'yBoth teams exchanged bone crunching rucks and mauls and everyone on the sideline was nervous until Ashley Kraemer (Mildmay) exploded and dragged three bodies with her across the try line. The game ended with a 10-0 victory for the South West and a berth in the gold medal game on Sunday. The final game of the tournament fittingly matched the first place South West against second Exeter Fury battle back for 4-4 tie EXETER — The Exeter Fury tack- led the London Portuguese team Wednesday night at home under the lights, coming from behind to earn a 4-4 tie in an exciting finish. The Fury had to battle back three times to gain the single point in a game that had tremendous highs and lows. The game didn't start well for the Fury when a penalty shot was called on a marginal play. Nathan Holmes made a tremen- dous save on the shot but was help- less on the rebound when his team- mates failed to clear the ball away in time. Shortly after that goal the Fury fell behind by two when a ball was played up the middle, skipping on the wet grass and eluding the Fury defence. The Portuguese played walked in and beat Holmes cleanly for the the 2-0 lead. Exeter, having struggled on offence in the last month on the road, began to look more comfort- able on its home field later in the first half. The Fury were able to get on the board when Andrew Prout crossed a ball into the box that Pete Fragiskatos was able to get his head on to direct it past the keeper. The goal seemed to spark the home squad as they began to con- trol the play with some fine passing and spacing on the field. Marty DeBruyn, the league's lead- ing scorer, tied the game for Exeter by making a move around a defend- er and firing a low shot into the cor- ner to give the Fury the momentum heading into the second half. Exeter came out of halftime confi- dent and continued to control the play which created some excellent scoring chances. Mike Nedza, who has been snake - bitten all season around the net, found himself alone in front of the empty net but his shot found only the post and bounced out of harm's way. The Portuguese team started to turn things around after that and had one of its own shots beat Holmes only to deflect off the post and back out to the Fury keeper. With about 10 minutes remaining, both teams were about to embark on a rollercoaster finish. The visitors took the lead when a header by a Fury defender went into the middle of the field where it was picked up by a London striker who fired his shot past Holmes for what appeared to be the winning goal. The Fury however, weren't quit- ting yet. The Fury pressed hard for the tie and with everyone up near the Portuguese net, a wild scramble saw Prout kick the ball across the line to tie the game 3-3. Before the Fury could even finish celebrating, a Portuguese player sent a cross into the middle to an unmarked player whose header found the back of the net as the visi- tors now had a 4-3 lead. The stunned Fury refused to give up and with time running out a pass was sent to Fragiskos Fragiskatos down the right side. Fragiskatos crossed the ball along the ground past a few sets of legs, right into the box where a sliding DeBruyn buried the shot for the dra- matic equalizer. Andrew Prout played a strong game as stopper for the Fury and Steve McLeod was a big help in playing his final game for the Fury as he is moving to Kitchener. The tie gives Exeter a record of 4- 6-4 and leaves the Fury in a four team battle in the bottom half of the standings with four games left. The next game is Sunday in Nairn. place Toronto. Toronto stole a pass out of mid air and jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. However, the South West girls answered with a strong forward game. Katie Weber eluded the defenders to score a try and Shannon Johnston tied the game at 7 with a successful convert. It was then the South West girls seemingly hit the wall and could not match the rucks of Toronto. Some well placed chip kicks gained many yards and allowed the Toronto team to take the lead back. When all was said and done, the game ended with the first defeat of the tournament for South West Ontario by a score of 22-7. The girls were disap- pointed to have lost, but they did capture the silver medal as the second best rugby squad in Ontario. The coaches were proud of the effort and are looking forward to having many of the girls back in two years for the next Summer Games.
