Road Watch conference in
Grand Bend Sept. 19-20
GRAND BEND — Road
Watch Huron is holding
the first provincial con-
ference at the Oakwood
Inn and Golf Resort Sept.
19-20.
"Our committee is
thrilled to be hosting this
conference and is look-
ing forward to meeting
people from across the
province who are trying
to make road safety a
priority in their commu-
nities," said Road Watch
co-ordinator Erica
Arnett.
The conference will be
an excellent opportunity
for communities con-
cerned about road safety
to network, share ideas
and learn about the
Road Watch program. It
will also be a chance for
the existing Road Watch
communities across
Ontario to expand their
knowledge of how to
market the program's
messages and to learn
from the successes of
other communities.
The Road Watch .. .
Watch Us Grow
Conference will feature
sessions on starting a
Road Watch community,
a panel discussion on the
value of Road Watch and
will provide assistance
with marketing the pro-
gram's message.
Road Watch is a com-
munity-based response
to impaired and aggres-
sive driving which allows
the general public to
report dangerous driving
to the police. The pro-
gram is quite simple —
anyone witnessing dan-
gerous or impaired dri-
ving, such as failing to
stop at traffic lights and
stop signs, speeding, tail -
gating, unsafe passing
and/or erratic driving,
fills out a confidential
citizen report form that
identifies the plate num-
ber, vehicle description
and a brief account of
the driving behaviour.
The signed, completed
form is dropped off at a
locked drop box located
throughout the commu-
nity, or sent to the
police.
Once the police have
verified the complaint as
valid, the owner of the
vehicle will receive a let-
ter describing the inci-
dent, with perhaps a
phone call or personal
visit from a police offi-
cer, depending on the
severity and frequency of
the unsafe driving
behaviour.
"The Road Watch
Huron committee is
excited about this oppor-
tunity and is looking for-
ward to sharing ideas
with the various commu-
nities from across the
province.
"Our committee has
worked very hard over
the last 10 months we
have been planning the
conference and we have
been very fortunate to
receive a lot of support
from the community in
order to help make this
conference a possibility,"
says Arnett.

ABCA fall tree planting season coming
USBORNE — The fall
season for tree planting is
approaching at
theAusable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
(ABCA).
The ABCA annually
offers trees and shrubs to
plant in windbreaks and
for the prevention of ero-
sion to protect water-
courses. According to
Kathy Hodgins, ABCA
Land Stewardship
Specialist, the fall program
has been running for
many years.
Order forms were made
available to the Ausable
Bayfield watershed com-
munity in late July. Copies
can still be obtained from
the ABCA or at municipal
offices.
The deadline for mail -in
orders is Aug. 31, but
orders can be personally
delivered with payment to
the ABCA until Sept. 30.
There are eight species
of trees available this fall:
the eastern white cedar,
Austrian pine, Colorado
blue spruce, Norway
spruce, white spruce, sil-
ver maple, sugar maple
and the America highbush
cranberry.
"The Austrian pine and
highbush cranberry are in
short supply this year and
those interested are urged
to order early to take
advantage of the best
selection," says Hodgins,
adding that now would be
a good time to plan for
spring projects, since the
ABCA offers seedlings for
spring and will be able to
scout the site to make rec-
ommendations before the
ground is covered with
snow.
The trees are expected
to be delivered sometime
in late October.
A Friday afternoon and
Saturday morning will be
scheduled for pick-up at
the Exeter office of the
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority.
In the fall, the trees are
used as windbreaks along
roadsides and in smaller
projects. In spring,
seedlings are sold to cre-
ate or reforest larger treed
sites. Grant programs are
available for costs associ-
ated with planting and
maintenance of the site
and the ABCA is also
available to offer assis-
tance with planting plans
for the spring.
For details, call the
ABCA at 235-2610.
