Local theatre creates economic impact in Grand Bend
GRAND BEND —
Huron Country
Playhouse is once again
creating a stir in the
popular summer desti-
nation of Grand Bend
with its 2004 Season of
Music and Laughter.
Since the launch of the
season with 'The Secret
Garden' back in June,
each production has
received enthusiastic
reviews from audiences
and critics alike.
"It is essential for us
to continue to raise the
bar and provide the
high calibre of enter-
tainment that people
have come to expect
from one of our produc-
tions," says Alex
Mustakas, Artistic
Director of Drayton
Entertainment.
Theatregoers are not
the only ones pleased
with the first-rate pro-
ductions staged at
Huron Country
Playhouse. Many busi-
ness owners in the area
are thrilled with the
economic spin-off effect
the theatre has generat-
ed for the local commu-
nities.
"Ontario's West Coast
is rich in theatre," says
Joan Karstens, owner of
Brentwood on the
Beach B&B in Grand
Bend. "We have devel-
oped a great partner-
ship with the Huron
Country Playhouse and
our guests have such a
good time at the theatre
that it makes their
whole stay something to
be cherished."
In June, Brentwood on
the Beach celebrated its
10th annual Breakfast
with the Stars.
"Our guests come for
the weekend and are
treated to dinner on
Friday evening followed
by a performance at the
Huron Country
Playhouse. The next
morning, they socialize
with the cast of the
show over breakfast."
Mustakas believes that
establishing unique
win-win partnerships
with other tourist
attractions is imperative
for cementing the
town's status as a first-
rate vacation destina-
tion.
"Theatre and the
beach really go hand in
hand," he says. "Grand
Bend is renowned for its
stunning scenery, and
the theatre is an excel-
lent way to add a
unique cultural experi-
ence to your family
vacation or weekend
getaway."
A survey prepared by
the Ontario Arts Council
estimates that for every
dollar spent at the Box
Office, an additional
seven dollars is spent in
the community —pro-
viding a tremendous
economic spin-off for
local businesses.
Mustakas is quick to
point out the economic
impact of professional
theatre isn't limited
solely to the hospitality
and retail sectors.

cians.
