Trapshooting Promotor award VINEMOUNT — Jamie Caldwell of Hensall, owner and operator of the Kippen Gun Club, was awarded the Mike Fulop Enthusiastic Trapshooting Promotor Award at the 85th Invitational Ontario Provincial Trapshooting (O.P.T.A) Championships at the Hamilton Gun Club July 31 -Aug. 2. The award is selected by the O.P.T.A board. Some of the criteria for the award include must be or have been an active trapshooter of registered targets, demonstrates positive enthusiasm for trapshooting, has promoted the sport and made it enjoyable for others and has not won before. The winner receives a plaque listing the attributes that earned the trophy. Caldwell said although he had some idea he was to receive the award, he was still surprised. "I did a little speech and I had trouble getting my thank you's out. It's quite an honour." Caldwell has been shooting for 30 years and said it is his involvement in the sport as well as keeping the gun club open for so many years that caused him to be picked for the award. Caldwell added one of the ways he tries to encourage new shooters is to give them a couple of free rounds. "That always seems to drum up interest." Caldwell also thanked the help he has had at the gun club over the years. "I'm not alone, I can't do it without help." members who are front L -R: Don Richardson, Bob Parsons, Mark Baker, Dennis Gower, Daryl Hern, Dennis Richardson, Cam Stewardson and Dave Broom. (photo/submitted) Juniors head to playoffs CREDITON - The Crediton junior girls fastball team ended its regular season league games with two losses but both losses saw some great action. Crediton 2 vs London 3 Crediton jumped on the scoreboard in the third inning scoring two runs but were unable to hold the lead with Oakridge scor- ing one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and then the win- ning run in the bottom of the seventh inning The Crediton squad played Nikki Cyr very competi- tive ball with smart plays both offensively and defensively. With the previous game bat- ting problems, this game was a different story with eight of the 11 bat- ters getting on base. Amber Preszcator led her team at the plate with two singles, one being a nicely placed bunt. Kerri Fulton start- ed the game with a long double and single hits came from the bats of Megan Preszcator, Kelli Fulton, Janelle Dykstra, Jessica Bray, Nikki Cyr and Carie Pertschy. Jessica Bray and Rachel Michielsen were both strong in the pitch- ing position with Bray notching one strikeout and Michielsen striking out two batters. Crediton 5 vs Strathroy 9 If only the Crediton squad could get the first two innings back, it would have been a very different ball game. Strathroy scored seven runs in the first two innings to take a huge lead, adding two more runs in the fourth inning. Crediton replied with one run in the fourth and one in the sixth and then it was great to see the bats come alive in the final inning with eight Crediton batters coming to the plate scoring three runs. Nikki Cyr again should be commended for catching for the team, a position she does not regularly play. Nikki Cyr and Jessica Davies led their team at the plate with three sin- gle hits apiece. Two sin- gle hits apiece came from the bats of Megan Preszcator, Kelli Fulton, Kerri Fulton, and Janelle Dykstra. Carie Pertschy belted out a double to start the rally in the sev- enth inning and Margaret Geurts added a single hit. Margaret Geurts start- ed in the pitching posi- tion with relief from Carie Pertschy and Rachel Michielsen. The Crediton squad heads to its playoff tour- ney this weekend in Strathroy.
