Walton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning In the bottom half of the inning, Ricky Geoffrey tripled and was later singled home by Craig Skinner Joe Clifford led off the sec- ond inning for Zurich with a single and later scored on a throwing error to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Walton replied with a run in the fourth inning to tie the game and scored two in the sixth for a 4-2 lead. Jeff Finkbeiner led off the sixth for Zurich with a triple and scored on a single by Geoffrey. Geoffrey would also score later that inning to tie the game 4-4. The score remained tied until extra innings when Finkbeiner singled home the winning run to give Zurich the victory. Dennis Gower pitched five strong innings for the Rangers and Dwayne LaPorte picked up the win in relief. Finkbeiner and Geoffrey had two hits each and Skinner had two runs batted in to lead the offense. The Rangers play again Thursday in Belmore and they host the Goderich Orioles Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Jeff Finkbe iner Masse strikes out 22 for Express EXETER —In playoff action Saturday the Exeter Express defeat- ed the St. Thomas Elgins 2-1. Starting and winning pitcher Derek Masse set an Express and league record with 22 strikeouts in a nine inning game. Express coach Doug Fairbairn said, "Derek was especially sharp today. He is always tough on oppos- ing hitters, but today he had all his pitches working and was almost untouchable." When called upon, the Express played flawless defence as well, highlighted by a diving catch by Dan Masse in left field. Adam Leppington led the Express offense with two singles, three stolen bases and a run scored. Bobbie Grant led off the eighth with a double and scored the win- ning run on a Lonnie Hawke RBI single. Other Express hitters were Ryan Fairful, Marty Merner and Aaron Leppington. Masse gave up only three singles in the game, all in the seventh inning to record St. Thomas's only run. Fairbairn added, "It should be mentioned that our pitchers all feel much more comfortable throwing to newcomer Bobbie Grant. He has encouraged all of our pitchers to keep the ball low and he'll deal with the balls in the dirt. I would also like to say 'get well soon' to long- time Express coach Joe Fulop." The Express play their next home game Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Listowel. SPORTS TIPS? Saturday in London the Fury dropped a close 1-0 decision to the German - Canadians and Thursday Exeter was knocked out of the Cup competition with a 6-2 loss to the Hispanos. Saturday's game was a tight contest with Fury keeper Nathan Holmes making several saves to keep his team in the match. The home team took the lead on a rocket to the top corner of the net which Holmes had no chance on. The Fury struggled in the first half, suffering a few injuries that started to deplete their defence. Joe Forrester and Craig and Ryan Hern all played through the pain in the second half as the Fury was missing a number of players for this game. The Fury struggled to get any offence going until the second half. Marty DeBruyn had the best chance when his header beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by a defender. Holmes was at his best in the second half as he made three or four tremendous diving stops to deflect the ball over the bar or wide of the mark. In Thursday's Cup play the Fury fell behind early and never recovered, los- ing 6-2 to the Hispanos. Exeter called up Ron Reymer and Tony VanMierlo from the Masters team to fill their lineup for this game. Exeter gave up the first goal in the second minute when a beautiful cross was struck out of the air and past Holmes, stunning the Fury. DeBruyn tied the game shortly after when he beat the keeper in a race to the ball, chipping it straight up and over the goalie who gave DeBruyn two hands to the face on the play. The ball landed on the line and bounced up into the top of the net to equal the score. The tie was shortlived as the Hispanos attack notched three more goals for a 4-1 lead at the half. The Fury played lethar- gically in the second half allowing two more goals on long crosses to the back post to the unmarked man. VanMierlo made a move in the box and was about to fire a shot on net but was hauled down. It resulted in a penalty shot DeBruyn finished off as he managed to put the rebound of his shot just under the keeper's arm. "Our team has been struggling the last couple of months but Saturday's game showed we still have some fight left in us," stat- ed Fury spokesman Jason McFalls. "We are beginning to suffer some injuries which is not helping matters either but we are still opti- mistic that we can pick up a few wins here late in the season," McFalls went on to say. The loss drops the Fury's record to 4-6-3 for sixth place. The next action for Exeter is Wednesday night at 8:15 p.m. under the lights at the Community Park against the fifth place Portugese.
