The reminder comes after police received complaints from citi- zens in the Goderich area who were approached by an indi- vidual offering to pave their driveway. The callers indicated they were connected to the bridge construction taking place on Bluewater Highway just north of Goderich. The sellers told citizens they had recycled asphalt for a good price. At least one person was told they had new asphalt for sale at a reduced rate due to a problem at the bridge. According to police, the bridge company is not involved in this sale. The recycled asphalt has all been purchased from them for personal use. The new asphalt they will be using comes from a local company and there will be no prob- lems of unused product. Police report two cases where citizens report having been pre- sented with an exces- sive bill after the work was completed. In both cases the bill was paid. Lambton and Bruce OPP detachments have reported similar prob- lems this summer. Here are several steps that can be taken when doing similar business. • Ask for references and business cards. • Check with the Better Business Bureau. • Get a written esti- mate that specifies the work to be completed. • Be wary of door-to- door solicitors. • Don't be intimidated or bullied into having work done. • Don't be rushed into making a decision regarding repairs. • Get estimates from other companies for the same work if repairs are needed. • Ask a family mem- ber for assistance in dealing with contrac- tors. • Ask to see proper identification from all service people. Ten reasons to check with the Better Business Bureau: 1. The bureau keeps an extensive list of reports on local busi- nesses. 2. The bureau reports are given in an unbi- ased manner. 3. Reports include the experience the bureau has had with the busi- ness regarding cus- tomer relations. 4. The bureau can provide consumer counseling when you run into trouble. 5. The bureau handles complaints, in writing, if there is a misunder- standing. 6. The bureau pro- vides mediation and arbitration services between consumers and business. 7. The bureau pro- vides reports on chari- ties and fundraising organizations. 8. The bureau has "Tips" brochures for consumers. 9. The bureau has "Tips" brochures for businesses. 10.
