Scoring has never been a Masters strong point but an 8-2 win at home against Benfica July 30 changed that. Exeter took control from the start as precision passing and a low shot by Trevor Magregor put them up 1-0. The Masters kept the offensive pressure up with Tony Van Mierlo and Roland Juhnke adding singles to put Exeter up 3-0. One of Benfica's players got hurt and with no spares played the rest of the game one short. A defensive coverage breakdown allowed Benfica to score one goal just before half time. The second half saw the same offensive pressure with Exeter scoring five goals, two from Ian Chisholm and one each from Van Mierlo, Tony Vandenheuvel and Hubert Haccius. Alex Kollias and Jed DeJong played well in supporting the attack. Tuesday at Woodstock Exeter's defence was caught flat footed enabling Woodstock to score the first goal. Minutes later Van Mierlo scored off a pass- ing play from Mike Flanagan before Chisholm scored off a rebound from a Van Mierlo shot to put Exeter up 2-1. Woodstock was award- ed a corner kick and made no mistake by curl- ing it into the net to even the score but just before half Vandenheuvel beat a defender one on one to put Exeter up 3-2. The second half saw Van Mierlo score his second goal and Peter Hakvoort coming off a month long injury to score the last goal to give the Masters the 5-2 victory. Strong midfield play by Dick Lord and veteran leadership by Joe Laurie enabled the victory. Exeter sits in seventh spot out of 14 teams with 16 points resulting from five wins, six losses and one tie. The next home game for Exeter is Aug.13 versus Taxandria at 8 p.m. Dick Lord Exeter Fury post 6-2 loss EXETER — The Exeter Fury continued their strug- gles in league play Sunday dropping a 6-2 decision in London against Curinga. The Fury played a strong first half by gaining a 2-0 lead on goals by Marty DeBruyn. But Curinga responded just before the half and that goal gave them momentum heading into the second half. DeBruyn's first goal came off a free kick by Ryan Hern in his own end. The ball made its way up to DeBruyn who managed to elude the defenders and cleanly beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead. The second goal was a well placed shot by DeBruyn low into the short side. Exeter continued to have chances to increase their lead. Mike Nedza headed a ball that hit the cross bar and went out of play. After scoring the second goal Curinga cut the lead immediately on a hard shot Fury goalie Nathan Holmes had no chance on. Curinga came out strong in the second half, gaining numerous scoring chances. Holmes made some outstanding saves to keep his team in the game but after the home team tied the game and then took the lead things fell apart for Exeter. The Fury still were getting good opportunities on offence. Andrew Prout hit the cross bar on a hard shot and Nedza broke in from the side a couple of times firing shots the keeper managed to save. "We played an excellent first half but for some rea- son we aren't capable of playing a full 90 minutes and it continues to hurt us," said Fury spokesman Jason McFalls. The loss dropped the Fury to sixth place with a record of 4-5-3. Exeter plays their Cup semifinal Thursday in London against first place Hispanos and then takes on German Canadians Saturday in London in league play. Exeter Times -Advocate Sports Wednesday, August 11, 2004 Exeter Express in playoffs EXETER — Two wins for the Exeter Express over the London Bulls Tuesday by scores of 5-3 and 7-3 moved the Express into second place overall in the Southwestern Senior League. Playoffs began on the weekend with Exeter taking on the London Stingrays. The Express will apparently have home games against St. Thomas and Listowel with away games against the Stingrays and London Bulls. After all eight teams have com- pleted their games in this unbal- anced playoff schedule the top four teams will play in a semi final and final games for the championship. Exeter had been off for a few days and it showed in game one Aug. 3. The Express made numerous baserunning and mental errors but quality pitching by Derek Masse kept the team in the game as none of the Bulls rims were earned. Masse struck out nine batters and scattered seven hits. The Express scored in the fourth on a single by Lonnie Hawke and a double by Nick Regier. The Bulls scored their rims in the bottom of the fourth on one hit and two Exeter errors. The Express came to life in the sixth scoring five runs on hits by Marty Merner, Hawke, Dan Masse and Vic Oliveria plus two walks. Other Express hits came from Bobby Grant, Aaron Patterson, Regier and Matt Hummel. Game two was restricted to six innings due to a curfew. The Express jumped into an early 4-0 lead in the first two innings but the Bulls rallied for three runs in the second and third innings. The Express put the game away though with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Exeter racked up nine hits during the game with Patterson, Oliveira and Hawke each having two. Single hits came from Grant, Aaron Leppington Merner and Ryan Fairful. The team played outstanding defense with Grant leading the way. He not only caught both games and had two hits but also kept the pitchers on their games in both contests. Dan Masse pitched a gutsy 2.66 innings giving up the three runs on five hits. Derek Brown pitched a stellar game in his relief effort of 3.33 innings allowing zero runs on two hits. Playoffs The Express playoff hopes hit a snag Sunday as they lost the first game against the London Stingrays 5-4. The Express hit the ball hard winding up with 11 hits and played adequate defense with Scott Smith and Hawke putting in superb efforts. The pitching was decent and by the end of the game the inspiration to do well had returned to the squad. What hurt the most was a combi- nation of a lackluster beginning, hard hit balls which normally wouldn't have been fielded and some questionable calls by the umpiring staff said team spokesman Joe Fulop. The Express scored a run in the first on hits by Hawke and Oliveira plus a walk to Grant. The Stingrays rallied for three runs in the second off pitcher Merner but Exeter scored one in the fourth on hits by Scott Smith and Dan Masse plus two errors. London replied with a run in the bottom of the fourth but Exeter again struck back to tie the game in the sixth with singles by Adam Leppington and Patterson followed by a triple from Aaron Leppington. The Stingrays scored their final run in the seventh on two hits. Three Exeter pitchers allowed nine hits with Paul Elston being the most impressive during his one inning of relief. Jeremy Stone pitched four innings and did well but took the loss. The outstanding offensive player of the game for Exeter was Grant who had one hit, one walk, two hit by pitches and a stolen base. Exeter needs to win at least two of their remaining three games in this playoff schedule to advance to the fmals and will likely play a home game Sunday. The team defeated Oneida by a score of 8-7 and were mercied by London South with a score of 15-4. Crediton 8 vs Oneida 7 The Crediton team took an early lead on its opponent which really helped the squad with Oneida's offensive sixth inning which tied the game. Margaret Geurt started the seventh inning at bat and pounded out a double. Nikki Cyr moved Geurts to scoring position with a single hit and Megan Preszcator's sacrifice grounder scored the winning run. Cyr was very hot at the plate pound- ing out a triple and two doubles, Katelyn Squire, Kerri Fulton and Margaret Geurts added a double and single hit apiece. Two single hits came from the bats of Amber Presz-cator and Kelli Fulton and singles were bat- ted by Megan Presz-cator, Janelle Dykstra and Jessica Bray. Carie Margar Geurts et Pertschy was strong in the pitcher's position going five and one half innings notching two strikeouts with relief from Jessica Bray. Crediton 4 vs London South 15 Crediton's problem seemed to be offensively, with only four batters reaching first on hits. This lack of batting power seemed to be the problem in Crediton's 15-4 loss to the second -place team from London. The local team came out fly- ing in the first inning scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead but a six - run sixth inning clinched the win for its opponent giving Crediton its first loss by a score over 10 runs. Megan Preszcator led her team at the plate with a triple and two singles, Kelli Fulton added three singles, Kerri Fulton two singles and Jessica Davies reached first on a bunt. Carrie Dixon went the distance on the mound. Police respond to two area break-ins EXETER — Huron OPP responded to two break- ins in Exeter over the past weekend .
