win qualifier
HANOVER — The Exeter Bantam Boys qualified for
the Ontario Championships at a tournament in
Hanover last weekend.
Exeter's first game was against Kincardine, which
ended in a 14-4 mercy win by Exeter. Chad Hackett
pitched four solid innings, while Jeremy Oke and
Shawn Morgan shut Kincardine down in the last two
innings to record the win. Hackett also had a home
run and Mitch Masse and Troy Elder had triples to
put the game away.
The second game was a 10-9 loss against Mitchell,
who had previously defeated Goderich. The tight
game found Exeter's pitching having a hard time find-
ing the strike zone.
Because of the loss, Exeter was back in Hanover
Sunday morning having to win three games in a row
to qualify.
Once again, Kincardine was no match for Exeter, as
the Bantams won 12-2 in five innings.
Because of Exeter's loss to Mitchell the day before,
Exeter had to beat them twice to advance. The first
game was another tightly -contested game going to the
bottom of the sixth inning tied with two out and the
bases loaded. Morgan ripped one to the fence for a
three -RBI double. Masse closed out the 10-7 win in
the seventh inning.
The next game against Mitchell was a pitching duel,
with Exeter winning 5-4. Hackett, Morgan, Masse and
Shawn Harrigan were the pitchers in the game, which
allowed Exeter to qualify.
It was a great tournament for Tim Bilcke, Exeter's
catcher for most of the tournament. Timely base hits
by Ben Hodgins, Nick Ashawasaga, Brenden Bilcke
and Ron Renning were also valuable.
The OBA championships will be held in Wallaceburg
on Labour Day weekend.

Holes -in -one at Exeter Golf Course
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
Two more Exeter
golfers were the latest
recipients of a run of
good luck at Exeter Golf
Course recently as they
both sank holes -in -one in
the last week.
After eight years of golf-
ing Jeanne Phillips of
Exeter sank her first
hole -in -one on the sixth
hole July 30 followed by
Brad Claus Aug. 2 on the
third hole.
Phillips said she had
been having good luck on
the sixth hole for the last
three weeks with a birdie
on the hole as well as get-
ting closest to the pin in
her league play.
After her hole -in -one
July 30 she fired another
birdie Aug. 2.
Phillips was in a group
with Esther Martineau
and Jean Crerar when
she made her shot.
"We saw it go up there
and when it dropped it
kicked with pretty good
force, so I thought it
kicked off the back," said
Phillips.
After searching unsuc-
cessfully for the ball, one
of Phillip's companions
suggested looking in the
hole, "and there it was, in
the cup."
Phillips hasn't played
with the ball since and
plans to make a plaque
out of it along with the
medallion and towel she
received from the course.
Shooting on the third
hole Aug. 2, Claus also
sank his first hole -in -one
with a pitching wedge
after golfing for four
years.
It was a good day for
Claus who also shot his
best ever round with a
38.
In a group with Roman
Wilson and Chris Arnold,
Claus said he knew the
shot had landed short on
the green and when he
walked up to look for it, it
was in the hole.
After sinking the shot,
Claus switched balls and
landed his next shot in
the pond.
Claus has had a plaque
made up with the ball.
