Garden party at
the Varna manse
By Joan Beierling
VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA-It was a super
weekend; the weather co-
operated beautifully.
Friday night at the garden
party there
were 14
acts on the
program, for 1-1/2 hours
of entertainment. Then
everyone went to the ball
diamond for a rousing co-
ed celebrity ball game
between the Varna Hit 'n
Misses and Hully Gully.
Saturday morning start-
ed off with an old-fash-
ioned breakfast that was a
sell-out. The parade fol-
lowed with 100 entries
and lasted for almost an
hour. Traveling golf fol-
lowed -a great game for
young and old alike. The
quilt show was a huge
success, with over 50
entries. The antique trac-
tor show on Saturday and
Sunday had over 60
entries, and the car show
had over 30 entries. The
school reunion was the
place to visit and renew
acquaintances. On both
days, there was a scav-
enger hunt and old-fash-
ioned games for the chil-
dren, and this kept the lit-
tle folks happy and busy.
On Saturday night the all
ages BX93 Video Dance
Party was another great
success, with over 650
people in attendance.
On Sunday morning at
the Varna Complex, there
was almost a full house
for the church service
with Pastor Elly Van
Bergen officiating, and
Kevin Stewart as guest
speaker and with the
offering
going to
Camp
Menesetung. Special
music was provided by
the Mother/Daughter
Community Choir and a
mother/daughter quartet.
Sunday afternoon was
filled with all the same fun
activities as Saturday,
with a fish fry dinner in
the evening. The beard
judging contest, with all
seven participants being
winners, finished off the
weekend of fun and cele-
brations.
The committee would
like to thank all those who
helped out in any way. All
the sponsors, the organiz-
ers, the participants, and
each and everyone who
helped out -you know who
you are. It made for a very
successful and fun week-
end.
Pastor Elly Van Bergen
is hosting a garden party
at the manse Thurs., Aug.
19 from 2 to 4 p.m. This
will include entertain-
ment. Everyone is wel-
come!
Also, look for a list of
prize winners next week
for draws held at the
Sesquicentennial week-
end.
VARNA NEWS
Break and enter
LUCAN — The owners of a Richmond Street resi-
dence north of Lucan returned home to find the resi-
dence had been entered and a number of items were
stolen over the Civic Holiday weekend.
According to Middlesex OPP, jewelry, a Sony
PlayStation and a grey Century safe was reported
missing. The culprits placed the safe on a skateboard
found in the residence, and wheeled it out the door.
The safe contained family heirloom jewelry and other
items of value. There are no suspects at this time.
Middlesex OPP would like homeowners to follow
some advice when travelling:
• Make sure you let your neighbours know you won't
be around so they can watch over your home.
• Have someone pick up your papers and mow your
lawn.
• If you have more then one vehicle, leave it parked
in your driveway.
• Leave lights, a television or radio on a timer so
there's an appearance of someone home.
• Have your mail put on hold while you're away, or
have someone pick it up.
• Insure your home and contents, and store valu-
ables in a safety deposit box.
• Do not leave keys hidden in obvious places outside.

HENSALL - Residents enjoyed
husking corn outdoors in the court-
yard Friday afternoon as they
anticipated the delicious seasonal
treat of corn on the cob for supper.
Pastor Phil Wagler of Zurich
Mennonite Church led worship at
the July 27 church service with
Amanda and Anneka Zehr along to
provide special music. On Aug. 3
Pastor Vernon Dean of Exeter
Pentecostal Church brought the
message. Residents appreciated
volunteer organist Belva Fuss play-
ing the organ and Pastor Dean
playing the piano for the hymn
singing.
Residents are benefiting from
being outdoors on the deck for sev-
eral of the smaller group programs
such as Coffee and Current Events.
A canopy provides shade on part of
the deck for those preferring not to
sit in the sun.
Andy Rau, Glenn Deichert and
Phyllis Deichert performed in the
retirement home lounge for
Friendship Friday Aug. 6. Their
piano, guitar and fiddle music drew
a crowd to this favourite twice a
month program.
Barbecues are continuing as
weather permits throughout
August with retirement home and
nursing home residents dining out-
doors alternate Fridays. Thanks to
volunteer Klaas Van Wieren who
did the barbecuing each Friday in
July.
Pet Therapy, Music Therapy,
exercises, Breakfast Group, and
massage with Lori RMT were addi-
tional programs benefiting resi-
dents through the week.
